Buffer

Well, not on dvd burners, but i guess it applies the same way. as cfitz had clearly explained on the post above, buffer size does not make the burn quality better... it is just a matter of finishing the job fast, and without unnecessary linking caused by the burn-proof system. if your computer is not fast enough to provide the drive with the data it needs, then a bigger buffer is good for you, but it doesnt mean that a 2mb buffer won't do you any good... again, if your computer is quite fast, but then you do video editing, and stuff which takes too many pc resources, that would cause your drive too to use burn-proof... and a bigger buffer helps to lower the possibilities of that.

i have used both velocd 52x24x48x, which has 2mb buffer, and plextor premium 52x32x52x, which has 8mb of buffer, tested them on one same pc. they finished my test burn at almost the same time. plextor seemed to make a cleaner burn when i used the plextools q-check, but, very minimal differences. again, this could be media differences, but i used the same fuji 48x media. i chose to have the plextor because it rewrites faster than the velocd, and especially because IT IS A PLEXTOR. i don't usually do anything when i am burning something, probably surf a little, till a cd is done.

Several people have complained about this. I have a friend that bought the Sony and he sold it he was so disappointed with this about it. He had real trouble getting it to work with any of the cheapo media. I also liked the software that came with the Pioneer better than the Sony's (but again I'm a novice at DVD burners so I could be wrong here).

Horse puckey... it does just fine. In reality one of the better points of the 510A is that it does such a good job with a variety of media. Last thing I want is a drive that burns @ 4X on shitty media.

FYI the 510A Retail can be had on pricewatch for $280. Makes me wish I would have waited 2 more weeks.

You are correct though, 9 times out of 10, it boils down to user error.

anybody had experience with rima.com? are they reliable? of course i could check resellerratings.com on this, but, if anybody had experience with them, might as well... would any of you guys be able to recommend even more GOOD sites to order media from? +R's and -R, and +RWs as well.. thanks.

I'm familiar. Princo 4x DVD-R price is about US$1.0 per unit so it is not surprising Rima.com's selling them for as low as US$0.99.

You're saying that you want a drive that only works with expensive media and can't burn the cheap stuff? I think I'm missing something here. Please explain.

hi, these are just my opinions....

maybe he meant he doesn't his drive to be burning at 4x when in fact the cheapo media cannot safely burn at that speed??? that's how i understand his statement, but let's wait for him to post his explanation... maybe he meant he wants his drive to make sure all the time that a media can handle the speed it is rated or something...

lol... :)
