Really annoying POP-UP !!!

Sorry m8, but it doesn't appear as though the D-Link DI-704 router has a "filter" function to block specific IP addresses from the WAN (internet) side. My SMC router is uncannily similar in terms of the web admin interface, so you might get lucky and be able to find a newly released version of a flash upgrade for your router. The last flash ugrade for the SMC included this "filter" function.

But... there is hope..! I've reached the limits of my router, so I'm playing with Freesco now. It a router/firewall on a floppy disk, Linux of course

You simply have to download the floppy disk image, pop the disk into an old 486 fitted with two network cards, boot, and you have a very powerful router! Then it's easy to block specific IPs

The next step is a "reactive" firewall, which is capable of detecting portscans/DoS attacks etc. and then it implements firewall rules automatically. Sweet eh?

There should be a whole major new release of Freesco out very soon now, but the current release is more than enough for the most demanding users. Did you know that you can become an ISP if you fit a modem to the Freesco router? LOL!

There's another way around this too. Go and edit your hosts file and add something like this:

127.0.0.1 advertising.com

Any time a webpage links to an ad from that website, it will look to the localhost instead and not display it.

Pop Up Stopper and Zone Alarm Pro both block popups; Zone Alarm can block most banner ads too. Love that thing...

You can just uze mozilla1.x/netscape7.x/phoenix0.x and enable the option to "reject unrequested popup windows" that way links that you click on still pop up.

I like Zone Alarm Pro too. As glock20 said it stops pop-ups and banners and plus its one of the best protection I have seen. Personally I don't mind the ads though. If we like coming here often, we might as well see some ads and help in keeping the site up.

Got to bear in mind all that crap software/adware/scumware that tends to appear on your PC over time. They install porn dialers and all kinds of junk if you're not careful, and also often pop up ads. Kazaa users in particular beware!!!

We're starting to see the same thing as Adrian. While making money was never the focus of CDRLabs, having additional funding does help to pay the bills and allow us to do more things. Not to mention, it justifies me spending more of my time here.

What are your thoughts on this?

I try to remember to disable my Proxomitron when reading CDRLabs, because I want to support the site, although I do sometimes forget. The ads here are usually pretty well targeted. Also, CDRLabs doesn't seem to have as many flash and popup ads as many other sites have. Those are my big beefs with advertising: flash and popup ads.

I don't like the flash because it requires running ActiveX controls, which I distrust from a security standpoint, and I get tired of clicking the "do you want to allow this ActiveX control to run?" and "this page won't display properly due to your security settings" warning messages. My dislike of popups, particularly the kind that won't go away with a single click, needs no explanation.

So, in the absence of flash and popup ads, I do try to support the site by letting the ads display and encourage others to do the same. I even click through an ad banner or two from time to time, either because there is something that is actually interesting or because I just want to add few "millicents" to the coffers.

If your router supports a DENY table you can add the ip address or range depending if it supports CIDR or not to the deny table and reject all outbound connections to that range.

If you want some really annoying pop ups, go to http://www.turkeyscore.com and click the dont click button, then click the link that says "dont click seriously" I guess i just had to make up for my lack of pop ups somwhere. hehe...click it even though it says dont click...I dare you

i don't really mind the popups, nor those sliding ones either, and i don't block them.
but what does annoy me is that when i go to the forums main index page, even before i log in i get the popup, and then i can't get the username/password memory feature of IE to retrieve the username/password.
usually i double-click on the username box and i get the username/password filled in automatically. however if i've had a popup it doesn't work, and i have to either type them manually or reload the page.

can this be fixed?
