(mostly) Complete list of DVD Writers, and their OEMs

Prooving once again that I have FAR too much time on my hands, I have compiled a fairly complete list of DVD Writers, the media types and speeds they write to, their interface type, and even their OEMs!

This list took me over a week to create, and the info comes from more sources then I can easily name. To the best of my knowledge all the data is correct, however there may be errors. I welcome all comments and/or corrections happily!

if you're wondering WHY I did this:
I used to work at a CD/DVD media retail outlet, and in my time selling media I have come to the simple realization that most people don't know what media type they need. This list is my solution to that problem. I provide it to several media retailers in my area, and post links to it in places like this forum, in the hopes of keeping people from purchasing the wrong media :wink:

Wow! You put a lot of work into that. Nice job. I hope people who own drives take the time to check for accuracy and send you any updates as required.

Congratulations on the info you’ve gathered. Not just that it’s useful but it’s also completed.
One suggestion though. I know it’s complicated and some drives are out of date but a prince range would be nice… It’s a big afford but it’s only a suggestion…
For people like me that everyday are looking for the price drops it would be a big help. But I also have n mind that everyday a new promotion appears an it’s very complicated…

I only update my site every week or 2, and the prices change so quickly! it's hard enough trying to keep up with all the new DVD writers announced yet alone the prices they go for!

some of the drive on that lisrt have only just been released in Japan, and osme of them have not been released ANYWHERE yet.

I don't think adding pricing info would be plausible at this time. Maybe if I could hire people to scour the internet for me....LOL!

You might want to update the list with some missing models found in dvdplusrw.org's list here and here.
Btw the DVD-RW write speed is only 2x for the Accesstek (aka Optorite) DD0203 in the 2nd line.

ok, I fixed the accesstek, and added the optorite.

I'll work on the DVDPLUSRW.org lists when I get a chance.

Ok, I added the missing drives from the PC DVD Writers list on the DVDPLUSRW page.

The list now contains data on 179 PC DVD Writers!

There are some more models from Melcoinc and IO DATA.

It is Logitec, not Logitech.

Buffalo is just the brand name of Melcoinc company.

There are some more drive providers.

I heard from LG and Samsung that they were late to add Mt. Rainier support because there was no Microsoft OS supporing Mt. Rainier natively.

Microsoft usually adds support for specific hardware devices after being compelled to do so when everyone seems to demand it.

The same thing has happened with Serial ATA. The drive manufacturers have always said the motherboard chipset makers were not making chipsets for native Serial ATA support. The chipset and motherboard makers blame the drive makers for the lack of widespread use and high prices of Serial ATA HDD.

Tell LG that you seriously want Mt. Rainier DVD+RW support to the next model after GMA-4040B.

hrm...oddly enough I hadn't considered that LOL! probably because I was so used to having just the excel document there which made that sort of thing difficult at best. I'll do that!

Browse the Logitec, IO DATA, Melcoinc, and several other Japanese sites. Impress, Kakaku, and other Japanese information sites are also useful. Most of them are, officially, only available inside Japan.

I'm waiting for someone to say, "Hey dolphinius! Do the same thing with CD writers!" :) I know a couple lists like this exist for CD writers, but they aren't even mostly complete, more like 50-70%.

I haven't tried to make a list for DVD writers since there were too many model names. This list is far from being complete and even now it has 179 already. There must be thousands for CD writers. Good luck. :D
