HP 300i or Pioneer A05 ??

I am planning to get a dvd burner need your suggestions which one should I get???? HP or Pioneer ???I need your help. Thanks alot.

If you are in Toronto, I know a place that carries NEC 1300D (dual format writer) cheap, for $300 from Logic Computer House. They don't have it in stock, special order only, takes about 3 to 4 days.

I am pretty sure our local supplier have the NEC in stock. So it really only needs 1 day.

I have the NEC burner, quite good!

VERY picky with DVD-R media though.

DON'T buy if you want an easy life with the cheapest media. Pioneer 105 with the 2xforall firmware is the one to go for if that is what you're after.

The Pioneer A06 looks remarkably like an NEC ND-1300A

...rather then choose between HP and Pioneer, why not go for NEC?? LOL!

I haven't get my hands on many DVD media, so far, I have only tried Maxell (2x), Optodisc (2x), and Ritek +R (4x). I tried Princo but it does not work with this drive.

If you don't mind an NEC ND-1100A clone, you can get the IOMEGA DVD+RW drive from www.tigerdirect.ca for $196 CDN.

It doesn't look much like an NEC to me.

well, I meant the specs of the drive looked similar.... I suppose you are right though, it is unlikely that the A06 is an OEM

however, I have seen CD-RW drives that are OEMs with less in common then those two drives!

True, true, but the giveaway here is the placing of the emergency eject holes. The Pioneer is in the same place as the A05; the NEC is the same as the 1100A.

Both the 1100A and the A05 are apparently capable of burning both +R and -R, and beta hacks have apparently been released although neither are working very well. I've been told by some contributors of another forum that the A06 is a modified A05.

that makes sense actually. I've been hearing a lot about how most burners COULD be capable of burning both formats if the manufacturer wanted it.
