Hi all, I have brought one of those small form factor PCs from Dell a while back with a CDROM. Now, I would like to upgrade that CDROM to DVD-ROM. However, all retail DVD-ROM drives I seen are too big to fit into the slot that the CDROM is currently using. I have read the review on Lite-On LSD-081 DVD drive and it seems to be thin enough to fit into my system. I just want to know can the Lite-On LSD-081 work on system since I do not see a standard IDE connector on the back on the drive? If not, what drive would be thin enough and still has a IDE connector on the back? Thanks.
What kind of computer is it? (Model Number) Is it a laptop?
The only way to know whether it will fit or not is to try, but take a look at the inside of the drive bay and see if it looks like there is any chance of the plug on the LSD-081 fitting into the plug in your notebook. See the picture from Ian's review below:
It is a Dell GX240 desktop PC. The CDROM does not have a standard IDE cable connecting it to the motherbroad, but rather has an adapter-like cable that connects it to the motherbroad. I removed the cable and the connector on the CDROM looks similar to the photo from the LSD-081 review. The only difference is the connector from my CDROM is on its right-hand side (assuming the drive is facing myself) while the LSD-081 has it on its rear. Thanks for your reply, dhc014.
The easy fix for this is to call Dell, tell them what system you have and what kind of drive you want to buy. It might cost a few $$$ more, but at least you'll know it will fit.
Hi, Ian. Actually I did call Dell and talked to one of their sales people. However, she told me there isn't anything for me even thought there was an option to upgrade the CDROM to DVDROM when I first purchased it online. That is why I am browsing the net for any 3rd party product that I can use. Thanks for your input.
