This isn't a simple, "yes or no" question. There are 324 bug fixes in
Categorized List of Fixes in Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1). Theoretically, if you don't get any benefit from these fixes, then the service pack may not be necessary. Realistically, there are so many fixes including security enhancements that it should be a much improved version of WinXP.
Occasionally, there may be a conflict such as the Drive Image 2002 situation mentioned. On the other hand, Drive Image has had conflicts for other reasons as well, such as hardware. The service packs are so universally used that Drive Image will probably be modified to work properly.
