Best CD-R media for Video?

I've been burning alot of DVD backups lately in the form of SVCD, but can't seem to find a high quality media to put them on. I've been using TDK and Memorex (both of which use CMC Magnetics amnufacturer I believe). From what I've read around the web, CMC isn't really regarded as a decent quality media.

So basically I'm just curious if you guys can give me any kind of reccomendation on which media brand/manufacturer would be best for SVCD storage. Also, if you know of any good online stores that sell the media you would be reccomending.

Fuji (Made in Japan) is probably the highest rated discs I've used.

The fewer & shorter the blue bars, the better.

Also consider making an SVCD with 99 minute discs. You have an extra 170mb to work with, providing your DVD player (or computer drive) can read them ok. Mine can.

Thanks for the tip Spazmogen, I persoanlly have been using 80Min/700MB CD-R's for my SVCD's, but wouldn't mind giving 99min CD-R's a try. I usually put about 45-50min of video on a single disk to keep a decent bitrate, I could raise that a little bit with some 99min CD-R's.

Do you know of any reputable online dealers that happen to carry 99min Fuji CD-R's? Oh BTW, I'm in the U.S.

I don't think Fuji makes 99-minute discs. They aren't as common as regular 80-minute discs.

BTW, your burner will need to support overburning to make 99-minute discs work. What burner do you have?

Lite-On LTR 32123S model. I'm pretty sure I've over-burned a few things before with this drive, but I can't really recall.

I think I'm just going to stick with 80Min CD-R's for the time being, as I'm not sure if my standalone DVD player will support them or not. I'll just stick with what works for now But then I have to ask if you know where I can get any Fuji 80Min CDR's online

The LTR-32123S will overburn, I think. BTW, I use that drive, too!

Is there anyway of telling which manufacturer they are using before purchasing? Or does Fuji manufacture their own media? I thought I read somewhere that Fuji uses Taiyo Yuden?

Yea I noticed you have that same drive in your sig after posting. I've had it for alittle over a year now and it's worked flawlessly for me. I'm waiting for Lite-On to release a DVD burner before I go and make the dive on that piece of hardware

The thing I like about Fuji/TY is that their discs are great for overburning, and some SVCD's go over the 80 minute mark. In personal experience, Ritek discs overburn well too.

can somebody enlighten which brand of CDR or RW can retain the best image quality and less prone to read or write errors ?

There is no single "best" media, but some are better than others. In the US, Fuji (made by TY) is very good, and it is probably one of the best types of blank media available. Also, keep in mind that the quality of the drive also affects writing quality.

It's a page I threw together for the Samsung discs. All discs (Fuji included) were done @48x on a Lite On 52x24x52x. I bumped it up to 52x just to try it, and the result went up to 7 errors maximum from 5 errors.
