Can anyone tell me about the Optimum 50/pack 48x CD-R that's available at Staples? I would assume getting something for free means the quality can't be that great. I don't have any problems burning on them, but is there anything specifically bad about them? I'd rather not save anything important on them if they are not reliable.

I did not pick any up when I bought my Cendyne drive, However, they looked like they were in a cmc magnetics case. These are considered about as low as you can go in cd-r media. They will burn fine but I can tell you that certain drives may not be happy reading them and long-term durability is in question. As a side not I had to go to 3 different stapes until could find a Lite-on drive but it was worth it. Only 1 drive out of all three stores was a Lite-on much better than Benq.

these cd's are bad quality but just because something's free after rebates doesn't mean its cheap. what you want to buy is Fujifilm cd-r's. its made by a company called TY(forgot how to spell it out, Toyo-Yuiden?) anyways, their the best cd-r's available.

The disks are CMC, but for free I know that I can find a good use for them. And if not, I am sure they will make some really nice coasters for when I have company over.

Optimum upgaded thier CD-R's a bit - my brother just bought a 10 pack of the 48X at Big Lots (cheap ass dummy), and instead of blank generic disks they now have a new logo printed silver on the disc like Imations do.

These new Optimum CD's seem thicker than the no-label generics they used to sell (those were junk). Still they're CMC (cheaply made crap) and I dont know how good Optimum is on returning rebate checks quickly.

CMC's are good for backing up things youre not going to keep for a long time and making audio CD copies for the Car/portable. Get some good Tayio Udens (Fujifilm) for the stuff you want to keep!

i got my rebates from them before but the cd-r's are still crap. i made two cd's at almost the same time, one with the optimum and one with a Fujifilm and i checked them both with cd speed's cd quality check and the optimum had 200+ errors while the Fujifilm had less then 2.
