Nec ND-1300 - keeps on getting postponed?

I don't remember when this drive (Nec ND-1300) was originally meant to come out, but I've been waiting for it at least since February. Since then it's been gradually postponed by local retailers two weeks at a time.

Now they are telling me it won't be until July, before this drive is available.

Does anybody have more information on this or could confirm/deny this information from local retailers?

At this rate I might just as well wait for the Sony DRU-510 or even LG GMA-4040B multiformat drive in the fall :)

If thats the case, that shoots a big hole in my theory that TDK's new multiformat DVD writer is based on the ND-1300.

I could have sworn that Kennyshin said that its out in Japan. Of course, I could be drinking too much saki too.

I am pretty sure that the I/O Data OEM is available in Asia somewhere...

I actually think the drives are "final state" and should be available from most places that will carry them inside of a couple of weeks.

In some places on the west coast, most notably Fry's stores in southern california, the CenDyne ND1300 kits should be available in the stores either NOW, or by end of this week.

AIUI the drive is now available in some on-line outlets in the UK. Should be in all by May 12th apparently.

I don't want to put anyone off, as past performance isn't always a guarantee of future losses, but....

I just realised ND-1300A includes JustLink from Ricoh.

I don't know who makes the mechanism (rather than just the chipset) of the drive, but if it's Ricoh I'll pass on this drive.

I've had two Ricoh drives and they've both followed the same pattern that other ricoh owners have noted in various forums: tricky at reading even some pressed CDs initially and writing quality starts to detoriarate slowly over a year and finally it can't write anything without giving huge amounts of c1/c2 errors (at any speed).

I think there is/was something seriously wrong with how Ricoh designes their drive mechanisms and unless they've fixed it, buyer beware.

I don't think it was a coincidence that Ricoh withdrew from the US cdrw market so early.

PS I'm not trying to put down this drive, but I am passing on this information. Make of it what you will. I will personally wait for Sony 510 as my data is more important than Hollywood dvd rip-offs :)

EEK.

Well NEC CDRW drives also utilise JustLink. However the drives themselves, despite having Ricoh chipsets, are not Ricoh designs as far as I can tell and are far better quality than the Ricoh drives. The drives are manufactured (and I think designed) by NEC with help from Mitsubishi. I'd be inclined to trust these two Japanese manufacturers implicitly.

Of course, if the drives *are* Ricoh OEMs, that would be very significant. As far as I can tell, the only major DVD+RW manufacturers who are producing only +R exclusive drives are Ricoh and Philips -- the others (Sanyo, Sony, NEC) are producing dual drives. However, if NEC are Ricoh clones, and Ricoh themselves are also selling dual drives that leaves only Philips (HP who don't manufacture). Of the major -R companies, only LG are making a dual drive; Pioneer, Panasonic and Toshiba are still sticking with the single-format models. (Are Samsung -R or agnostic, not sure about them).

It would be a shame if one side were showing the white flag already. I was hoping for a merger between the two :-?

The NEC DVD writers (ND-1000A/1100A/1300A) are developed, designed and manufactured by NEC including the DSPs and PUHs.

Hmm I have a DVR-106D Dual from Pioneer, on my desk right now, So I don't think that holds to much weight :)

I bought one yesterday, but still haven't managed to burn anything yet. Only the bulk is available, so i have tried to burn with prassi, nero and Stomp.

Both Stomp and Nero recognize the drive, but i get fault messages when i try to burn. CDRW-Central.com have had a review on it, where they used Nero (the same version that i tried, 5.5.10-28...), and they succeded with the burning. Prassi doesn't recognize the burner at all.

Anyone else that have succeded with burning on the 1300 yet?
