they're all over the World with different products, generally established as a brand name. If you like it, get it.

The company itself is japanese but you are right most japanese electronical enterprises manufacture their products in Taiwan or in China .

http://www.sansui-jpn.co.jp/

website mixes japanese and english .

They seem to manufacture mainly audio/video products ( though they show few products on their website ) .

The product seems good ( i don't know the prices )

i bought a Sansui stereo system for both my mother and my sister.
it's a Micro component system (separate decks for receiver/CD/tape/MD/surround equalizer) - not like these mini stereos that are one big ugly plastic box with everything in it ugh!
bought just the reciever and CD decks + 2 speakers.

so far they work just fine, no problems. it's a really nice system, well designed in my non-professional opinion. nice metallic-gold finish.
sound is great!

They seem to be a pretty good brand, dodecahedron i think they look pretty good too, thanx vbl117 for the extra info, i thought they might be a taiwan or chinese brand, but nearly all the japanese company manafactuar their pruducts thier and sansui seem tobe the cheapest.

Sansui. Now there's a blast from the past!!!

Used to be one of the very best Japanese hifi manufacturers, up there with Denon and Pioneer. But I haven't heard much of them in recent years, and I think a lot of their budget stuff is simply cheaper manufacturers' products with a Sansui badge. I would hazard a guess that this personal stereo is just such an item.

In my experience all the VCD/MP3/CD players I've used have clearly had the same underlying circuitry. Poor sound quality, with interference from what sounds like the timing chips when playing discs. The video isn't too bad though. A lot of the players I've used have also had awful build quality, with buttons that don't work a lot of the time, bits of plastic which snap off and so on.

Make ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN this is a genuine Sansui (phone them and ask who manufactured the unit). If it isn't, run a mile, I'm afraid. That's my opinion anyway!
