Postby whoster69 on Mon May 19, 2003 10:46 am

Costco is now selling a Cendyne +/- burner for $229. The external is $289.

http://www.costco.com/frameset.asp?trg=subcat%2Easp&catid=84&subid=1333&hierid=1373&log=&NavTop=

Does anyone know who makes this drive or if there are any reviews of it?

Going by the specs, I'm guessing that it is an NEC ND-1300A.

cpurs, do you know that Sony is supplying DVD writers to Lite-On right now?

$100 per writer? Personally, I think that's wishful thinking. We'll probably start to see some of the single format DVD writers on clearance for close to that, but it will be a good year or two before high end DVD writers reach that level. Of course, thats my opinion..

Doesn't Lite-On make most of the parts for the Sony drives?

I'm still trying to find out who makes the new Cendyne dual format drives...

Yeah, their CD-RW drives. Sony is supplying Lite-On's 400D right now though.

Regarding $100 single format DVD writers, it isn't that crazy, especially if you are talking after rebate prices:
I got my CenDyne (Pioneer) DVR-105 for $128 AR + $11 tax way back in January.

Regarding dual format writer prices, there haven't been many deals unfortunately.
The Ikebana one not too long ago was a nice deal.
I was lucky enough not to hesitate and jump on a deal (posted in the forums) to get a Sony DRU-500A for only $221 shipped after $7 in ebates (not rebates), back at the very beginning of October 2002 when it had just come out and was almost impossible to find online.

I am excited about 8X burners (possibly) coming out in the 3rd quarter (fingers crossed).
Burners only:

Hehe... Mine too, but you probably already guessed that!

Still looking around trying to figure out who makes this drive. I'll post more answers when I find them.

Now where did I put that sonic screwdriver!

I was able to find one review of the NEC ND-1300A. You can read it at: http://www.cdrwcentral.com/modules.php?name=Reviews&rop=showcontent&id=61

Also, there is a media compatibility guide at: http://www.necd.de/software/1032_Medialist_ND-1300A.pdf

If anyone finds any more info, please post.

Sounds like a nice drive!

since i work at staples, they carry it in my store for $299

and i do believe NEC makes the drive, says ND on the model number, along with some numbers, ill look closer tomarrow

also about sony providing parts to liteon, aren't the liteons 2mb buffer, 12x dvd read speed? if so then they aren't sony's

but if liteon's are 8mb buffer, with 8x dvd read speed then yes, they are sony's

I received the external version of this drive from Costco yesterday. It's a ND-1300A, says so right on the box.

I don't know if I'm doing anything wrong, but the damn thing won't burn *anything* - not even a CD-R at 4X/8X/16X. My 52X burner works fine, so I'm wondering maybe my firewire port is slow, something's wrong with the computer, the 2MB buffer is too small, or I got a bad drive.

I'll try out a Sony DRU-510A and see what the deal is.

whoster69, you having any luck with your drive?

I haven't bought one yet. I don't know when I'll get to it either. Thanks for letting us know your experiences.

One thing to check however. I'm guessing you've got the external since you mentioned firewire. Do you have any other firewire devices? Do you know that your firewire is working correctly? I've heard about some motherboard's not implimenting firewire well.

Just a thought...

Good thought, it crossed my mind. It could very well be a bad firewire interface.

I wanted to pick up a USB 2.0 PCI card and go that route. I'll update again.
