Best 4X DVD-R media

Postby tlotz on Sun Apr 27, 2003 1:04 am

I want to buy one piece of 4X DVD-R media for a Pioneer DVR-A05 DVD-RW drive that a relative owns. Anyway, I am considering 3 brands:

Pioneer
Taiyo Yuden
Verbatim

So far, the Pioneer appears to be the most expensive, and possibly the best. The lowest cost and most available of the 3 brands listed above *appears* to be the Verbatim 4X DVD-R media. Is 4X media from all three brands good and if so, which is the best? My feeling is that I can do just fine with Verbatim 4X DVD-R media.

I don't know if this advice carries over to DVD-R, but for CD-R, Taiyo Yuden is often considered the best or nearly so, and Verbatim is very good as well. I haven't heard of any tests of Pioneer media, so I can't comment on their quality.

Anyway, I would think that the Verbatim would probably do fine.

This has been discussed ad nauseum in every forum I've been to and depends on a few factors such as your writer, firmware, your DVD player. What works on one PC may not work on another(one mans garbage is another mans treasure).
I tried Princo and Accu media but they made a few coasters so now I only buy Verbatim or Ritek(G04) DVD-R.

Yeah, I know about Taiyo Yuden being the best in CD-Rs, that's why I have praised them many times in the CD-R/RW forum. In fact, I rate TY #1 and Verbatim #2 in CD-Rs. But, I was trying to compile data on DVD-R media--I don't want to assume because TY is best in CD-Rs, they are best in DVD-Rs. I'm leaning towards Verbatim because of price knowing it to should be a good brand.

Have never had a single problem with Fuji(TY) or Verbatim DVD-Rs. When I have a couple more bucks than usual I buy the Fujis because they're usually a little cheaper over here in Canada than Verbatim. Both these brands have played in all of my friends' standalone DVD players which each have their own quirks and pickiness about the media that is played in them. Then again if your relative has a DVD player like the Pioneer DV-440, DV-444 or the DV-656A, they'll basically play anything you put in 'em.

Verbatim should be more than good enough, they're a very stable disc that is compatible with a very wide range of players.

One thing I would stress though: avoid the Verbatim spindles. These discs are made by CMC and whilst they aren't bad, they're not a scratch on the Verbatim discs.

So you're saying that all Verbatim DataLifePlus DVD media (DVD-R, DVD+R, etc) sold in spindles is made by CMC? Fortunately, I bought my Verbatim DataLifePlus media in a jewel case, so my mine is Mitsubishi Chemical made.
