MSX: Your Windows drive is stuck in PIO? That is probably why you can't burn faster with your Benq. See the FAQ forum for tips and tricks to enable DMA, even if Windows wants to force the drive to run in PIO.

Hoxlund: No offense, but I like to get "good deals" on products because, at least for me, money doesn't exactly grow on trees. Besides, when I really need a high-quality burn (i.e. one I want to last for a long time), I will use some not-so-free media that is higher quality (such as Fuji). I am not opposed to paying more for better products, but I think that it wise to save money in ways like this if it won't hurt me in the long run. :lol:

I am sorry if I gave you this impression, Hoxlund; when I mentioned Fuji media, I was not saying that they were any better than Memorex TY. I believe that they are exactly the same. I just used Fuji as an example of the fact that I am willing to buy media that isn't "free" when I want a burn that will last for a while.

Thank you for the clarification, though, as I don't want to give the wrong impression about which media is good and which media isn't good. :wink:

Reinstall helped, plus my windows drive is now also udma. Still acting a bit weird at times though, for some burns it limits itself to 16x. Haven't had a chance to test much what that's all about. At least it's going steadily instead of jumping up and down like it did.

jumping up and down on the buffer bar, usually means fragmented drive or your just using way too many system resources on other windows programs

Your computer must have been just fast enough that it could burn at 16x, even though the drive was in PIO. That's probably why the 16x worked right. Often, drives will go slower when buffer-underrun-protection kicks in than when burning at a slower speed in the first place, which would explain the jumping speed with the new drive.

When your CD-RW drive limits itself to 16x, it is probably doing this because it thinks your media isn't good enough to burn any faster. Mine limits itself to 32x with my 16x and 32x Imation media, and it limits itself to 40x on 40x TDK (RiTEK media).
