Opinions on best performing QUIET drive

Hi

Im looking for a new cd-rom and a new cd-rw. While performance is important, it is also important to me that the dive be as quiet as possible.

Im looking for you guys' opinion on the best drive combining these two features for both the reader and also the writer.

I have read some information about multi-beam technology and wanted to know your opinion of that as well.

Don't bother with multi-beam. The technology didn't work well when it came out and I don't think the drives are even being manufactured anymore.

If you're concerned with noise, take a look at a 40x or 48x writer. I've found Samsung's drives to be pretty quiet. Otherwise look at something with a speed control feature like some of the LG and Sony drives have.

Look to LG drives for performance and quietness.

There isn't much of a difference between LG, Samsung and LiteOn drives in terms of their noise at 48x.

Of course, LiteOn is by far the most noisiest, but they are all super-annoyingly-noisy.

I agree with Ian that speed control is the only thing that might alleviate the noise levels.

So, get a slightly slower drive such as 32X.

The LG GCE-8320B is very quiet.

i have the LG 8520B and itz pretty quite, but i havent had much experience with other burners. :lol:

Why worry about it? I mean yes, at full speed many drives can be very noisy... but if you use Nero's Drive Speed utility you can just set your drive down a knotch or two and it'll be fine. I find my LiteON drive is fairly quiet at 32x, a little noisy at 40x and can be bothersome at 48x. Though it has been known to reach speeds of up to 56x when burning/reading a 99min CD-R, and this can be VERY noisy....

the drive is a liteON 40125S overclocked to 48125W if anyone's wondering

I find my LG combo drive to be quieter at 48x burning than my LiteON burning at 48x.

My LG 8520B has proven to be super quiet, and it burns everything I thow at it (including Clone CD copies).

jedimc: I noticed on your webpage that you are making some CD-R/W Reviews. I was just wondering how you plan to do this using an LG drive?? do you have access to a LiteON for doing testing??

im just going to put some info about the disk eg brand,price, picture of the disks, etc.
itz gonna be really basic stuff.
anyway wat sort of tests can the liteON drives do?
They are pretty popular arent they.
