burn same file

Hi ! I'm new to this CR-R/CD-RW technology, I've just bought a Liteon LTR48246S, I noticed if I burn a file into a CD-RW media, later on, I amended the file in my hard disk and burn it under second session into the same media, when I launch Windows Explorer and select the drive, I can only see one file with the latest time stamp.
What happen to the earlier file? Does it mean that the file has been overwritten? if not, how to obtain the earlier file?
Please advise.

If you are burning a multisession ISO 9660 data disc, the older file is still there but it isn't linked into the latest session. You can retrieve it by burning another session on the disc and continuing from the earlier track that had the older version of the file instead of the latest track that has the newer version of the file. Of course, then the newer version will disappear.

You can also use tools such as IsoBuster ( http://www.smart-projects.net/isobuster/ ) to retrieve any file from any session of a multisession disc.

If you are using packet-writing (e.g. InCD or DirectCD) then the older file may or may not be physically gone, depending on where the replacement data was written. IsoBuster and other recovery tools may or may not be able to recover the older version, but I wouldn't count on it.

I assume that you're using Nero, since it comes with the LiteOn drive.

Normally, when a multisession disc is written, only the last session is accessible unless the proper access procedure is followed.

Nero provides the Nero Multi Mounter to access multiple sessions. From the Nero help file:

Using Nero Multi Mounter

1. Put the CD you want to read in your CD/DVD-ROM drive or in your recorder.
2. Select the corresponding drive in Windows Explorer.
3. Choose Properties from the File menu, or right-click on the drive icon and choose Properties from the pop-up menu.
4. A dialog box with several tabs appears. Choose the Volumes tab. You will see a list of all the tracks on the CD. As Windows automatically accesses the last track on a CD, this track is marked with a tick.
5. Select the track you want, and confirm your selection by clicking on OK.
6. From now on, Windows will display the track you have selected under the drive icon of the CD drive or recorder.

Inertia, is Nero MultiMounter still supported at all or on newer operating systems? I thought I remembered reading that it only worked/works on Windows 95/98/ME variants, and not on XP/2000. I know I've never found it on my 2000 box.

cfitz, the Multi Mounter doesn't appear in WinXP, so your report is undoubtedly correct. I was using Win98SE when I copied the help file information. I find it odd that Nero wouldn't mention this operating system dependency in their help file.

So, depending on which operating system yongwc is using, he may or may not be able to use the Nero Multi Mounter.

yongwc, as cfitz suggests, if you are using Win2000 or WinXP, you may have to use IsoBuster to access the sessions. The simplest way to eliminate this problem in the future is to link the sessions on the disc. When this is done, the multiple sessions will be read all at once without difficulty.

To link the sessions in Nero, when you choose "Continue Multisession disc", be sure that the "Replace files in compilation" and "Add new files to compilation" boxes are checked. This will ensure that multiple sessions are linked, and no special reader is necessary to access all files. I would also recommend that you read the Nero help file regarding multisession discs so that you understand all of that available information.

yongwc, after rereading your initial post, it occurs to me that you may have already been using the settings above (which should be the default settings). When "Replace files in compilation" is selected, it probably unlinks the file in the last session to the file with the same name in the earlier session. If you want to keep all copies of files in a linked session, you should probably rename the file before saving it.
