OEM Bare Drive LTR-48125W/LTR-32123S

I have a LTR32123S using Nero which tells me that it only works with the CDRW that it came packaged with. I am looking for a second LiteOn drive and saw the LTR-48125W on

which does not come with Nero. My question is this....will it work with the Nero version that I have now? Will they both work on the same computer using the same version of Nero in harmony?

In my experience the OEM versions of Nero only check the manufacturer portion of the drive identifier string and not the exact model number. So if both of your drives are identified as LITE-ON LTR-xxx, then I suspect you will be able to use your existing license number with either drive.

If not, then you will have to either switch license numbers every time you wish to change recorders (but you can still use the same installation of Nero - no need to uninstall/reinstall) or purchase an upgrade to a full retail license that will work with any supported drive.

Thanks cfitz.... Actually I'm getting a little afraid that these slower drives aren't going to be around too much longer. JAZZ used to sell the LTR32123S but they don't anymore and I don't want the fast spinning speed of a 52x. If my 32x goes bad I want a backup, preferably already installed. I'll end up buying the full version of Nero eventually anyway. Thanks again.

There are at least a couple of other ways around the higher speeds other than buying an older drive. First, you can flash the 52246S down to a 48246S. Second, you can use Nero Drive Speed to limit the rotational speed via software configuration. And I guess I should also mention that www.newegg.com is still selling the LTR-48246S retail package if you don't like either of those options. It will cost you a bit more ($54 shipped), but it might be another alternative to consider. I assume there are also other retailers still selling the 48x versions that might serve your purposes if you don't have your heart set on buying from Jazz Technology.

I would recommend that you buy a LiteOn LTR-52246S, not for the 52x speed, but because it is a much better drive than the older LTR-48125W.

I have both of these drives, and the recording ability of the LTR-52246S with the latest firmware is far superior to the earlier model, even at 52x. It produces significantly fewer errors, which is important for long term media reliability. It also eliminates a reading bug present in the 48125W when testing burned media for errors. It also eliminates a firmware bug in the 48125W which doesn't allow the overburn capacity of a disc to be measured.

On the site that you posted, the LTR-52246S is only $6 more than the LTR-48125W (which is already an obsolete model). I would strongly advise you to get the newer 52x model, which can be burned at 48x if you wish. I might add, that with high quality media, at 52x the LTR-52246S produces very high quality burns with an extremely low error rate.

The LTR-52246S is identical to the LTR-48246S except for the firmware, so if the 52x speed concerns you a LTR-48246S would be another option. The LTR-52246S and LTR-48246S are also convertible to either model by firmware flashing.

I will second that, a much better burner AND better reader. I'm running one of each. And let's not forget the 24x RW speed.
I would also add that there is absolutely no reason to fear the 52x speed. Considering the number of these drives in use, we have heard remarkably little about problems.

Well I sure appreciate all the info everybody it definately gives me something to think about. I have had absolutely no troubles whatsoever with my first burner and since I can't afford to make buying mistakes I decided to ask questions before I made a decision. Looks like there just might be a 52x in my future after all. Thanks again.
