DVD Media Quality

Postby MikeTR on Thu Apr 24, 2003 2:46 pm

I'm just trying to make sense of all the different DVD media that exist on the market today :-?. We already have a CD-R(W) media thread in this forum, but nothing like it for DVD media. I guess it's still a bit early to begin one, but I'd still like to know which media are regarded to be worth buying.

For now I'll settle for some insight on some discs that seem to be widely available:

Fuji DVD-R/+R (didn't even know Fuji made +R media)
Imation DVD-R/+R
Maxell DVD-R/+R
That's Write DVD-R/+R
Verbatim DVD-R/+R
Platinum DVD+R
Ritek DVD-R

If anyone more experienced in DVD burning can shed some light here, it would be greatly appreciated.

Also in that mix would be the bulk crap from places like Khypermedia.

I have a Toshiba SD-R5002.

Optodisc DVD-RW discs work really well for me. I have one that I've erased and written to about 10-15 times already and it can still be read just fine at the same speed in all my drives.

As for -R media, I use Princo 1X. Out of the 15 discs I've burnt, only one was of questionable quality - in some spots on the disc, my DVD-ROM drive didn't want to read it at all, however my burner could read it fine, albeit at a lower speed.

Note that all my discs are PC data only.

So far I've only used Princo 1x media on my Sony 500UL. I've done about 15 burns without a problem and they all work on my stand-alone Panasonic DVD player.
