HOWTO: Uninstall NTIDRVR.SYS?

hi all,

I recently installed FileCD2 demo version and after I uninstalled it, it left file NTIDRVR.SYS in winnt/system32/drivers directory. Is there any way to remove this specific driver? I tried the Devices Management Console (Win200 Pro SP3) with the Show Hidden Devices option selected but could not find anything.

If you can't find this file because of the system settings, try this:

(I'm using WinXP Pro for this but it should be similar to your Win2000)

Go to My Computer | Tools | Folder Options | View | and select "Show hidden files and folders" then click OK.

You should then be able to find and see the file in Explorer if it exists.

Sometimes Windows won't let you delete a system file (especially if it is already loaded in memory). If this is the case, boot into DOS and delete the file from a DOS prompt. Renaming is safer until you have determined that removing the file won't cause a problem.

Inertia, thanks for replying.

I did find the file, successfully renamed it and rebooted my PC. Hopefully, no messages came out on the system event log . One thing though that makes me wonder is that there are a lot of reference to this "driver" in the system registry. In addition, this drivier is used as an Upper Class Filter in both me CD-R andCD-RW, whatever that means.

How could one remove this driver using the proper remove device or drivers procedure of Win 2000?

Occasionally the upper and lower filter settings can cause problems which can be fixed by deleting these settings from the registry. For an example, see Cannot Access CD-ROM.....

If a normal uninstall procedure leaves a driver behind, removing it involves manually renaming or deleting the driver with appropriate registry editing.
