GCE-8520B causes slow system response in WinME

I just installed the LG GCE-8520B in a PIII-1GHz running Windows ME. I didn't see any other posts on this when I did a search...

When I run Windows Explorer (Right-Click "My Computer" -- Explore) it takes a full 20 to 25 seconds for the devices & files to show in the explorer window.

It's installed as secondary slave to a Pioneer DVD-106S master.

Has anyone else seen this? Would the firmware update correct it?

I mean, in the time it takes for this window to open, I could burn a full CD at 52x.

are you sure that this problem started after you installed the drive?Just do a small thing,disconnect the drive from the PC and then see what happens.Post the reply as soon as you can.
By the way,it's not possible to burn CD's at full 52X

I guess I'm officially in the wrong place for this, since it [i]does[/i] still take that long with the drive disconnected.

I swear this just started today, but I did have to uninstall/reinstall some software also.

It the behavior you are experiencing is a general balkiness, with the mouse movement being erratic, etc., then some badly behaved background application could be consuming most of the CPU resources.

First, defragment your hard drive(s). If this doesn't fix the problem, then quit all background programs using Ctrl-Alt-Del except Systray and Explorer. Open Windows Explorer (from My Computer) and see if it shows the devices quickly under those conditions.

If it works OK with background programs closed, then you need to troubleshoot to find out which application is causing the delay.

The shareware program TaskInfo 2003 is a good resource for monitoring all running applications and drivers (much more information that Ctrl-Alt-Del). It also identifies CPU % utilization by application, so you can easily see if a misbehaving application is consuming all of the resources. If this happens to be the case, you can right click on the application and terminate it.

Do you have a intel chipset?

You could also try removing all the startup programs that might be slowing down your system, got to run then type in "msconfig" and then and click on load startup group items.But only do this if you want to stop all the programs that startup with windows.

And make shaw that all your decice drivers are upto date by going to windows update or if you have a intel chipset going to www.intel.com and installing Intel Application Accelerator.

I found the problem, and thought I should report back since it may cast aspersions on the LG CD-RW drive.

When I installed the GCE-8520B, the power cable to my floppy was just a tad too short once I connect the new LG drive in the middle. So I switched the floppy to the other power chain, since it had one of the same connectors.

A misaligned connector pin caused the floppy to be inaccessable, hence the time it took for windows explorer to launch, obviously going through several retries on the floppy.

Moral: Be careful out there, kiddies!
