LTR-48246S vs LTR-52246S

What are the difference? Is it only 52x vs 48x writing speed, or are there any other technology differences?

Because I'm thinking of buying a CD-RW, I decided to go for Liteon, but unfortunately shops in Lithuania don't have 52x model yet. I'm quite anxious, so if it's only speed difference, then i'll go for 48x model :)

There is no known difference in the hardware, although we can't guarantee 100% that there isn't some difference that has yet to be discovered by the community. Many people have flashed their 48246S drives with 52246S firmware and thus converted their drives into 52246S models.

the only thing you'll be missing (to the best of anyone's knowledge) is some 8-10 seconds.
that is if you can find media that burns at 52x.

And you won't even miss that if you do a flash upgrade and convert to the 52246S.

Personally, I agree with dodecahedron's attitude that the slight decrease in burning times achieved by going to 52x burning is nothing to get excited about. I have left my 48246S as a 48x burner, and have no intention of converting it to 52x.

I'm shocked :o that nobody has mentioned that owning a "real" 52x drive gives you all the associated bragging rights and social prestige of owning the fastest burner alive. Flashing a 48x drive is great, but it still says 48x on the face plate. :P

I have the LTR-52246S and bought it because it was on sale($30 after rebates)and the LTR-48246S was $54 but as was stated earlier 52x media is hard to find and the differance in burn time would be negligable.A problem I have found is that older burn programs(RecordNow Max/DX),CD-Maker 5,etc) won't recognize newer high speed drives or they are limited to 32x or "Max" write speed.
BTW..Flashing other firmware can ruin your drive not to mention void the warranty.

Here, cut this out and paste it on the front of your drive:

Not only will your faceplate say 52x, but it will also have the extra cachet of a "CDRLabs" logo (lightly) stamped on the front of it as well! :D

Flashing a LiteOn is a pretty safe operation. There are plenty of tools to repair it if the flash goes bad, and also to flash back to the original version.

Found a difference between the two ;)

The 48246s has a 12x cdrw in the box, and the 5224ks has a 24x cdrw in the box, at least that's what i heared from someone of Liteon europe.
Should have spend that 4 euro on the 52246s because a 24x cdrw is still hard to find in the netherlands, only found it online, but the shipping cost is to much :(
