Why do you assume that Taiyo Yuden is the best? Both Mitsui and Mitsubishi have some EXCELLENT CD-Rs that compete quite well with Taiyo Yuden. Taiyo Yuden *IS* good, but I'm not sure they qualify as the best in all cases.

The Hitach-Maxell discs are hard to find, but they too are very good.

True enough! the Hitachi Maxell made CD-Rs performed quite well on my aging tests

My aging tests are comprised of burning CD-Rs and then wating 4-7 years and seeing how many discs die!

Sony Corp Discs made by Lead data also scored fairly well.

Woot, my lead data discs died pretty fast (along with old CMC discs).

Anyway, discs that I rate high is:

Taiyo Yuden
Ritek (only some types)
Hitachi maxell
Mitsui toatsu
Kodak (not availible anymore, and not good for high speed writing).
Fujifilm (the new phthalocyanine type that is made by fujifilm in Germany).
Hi-Space

Of the CD-R makers, my favorite is Taiyo Yuden and second favorite is Mitsubishi Chemical (Verbatim). I have not tried Mitsui and don't have enough Hitachi Maxell CD-Rs to make a comment about Hitachi Maxell.

OC-Freak, you probably got the Sony Corp discs that were ACTUALLY manufactured by Sony themselves. Sony actually has a small manufacturing plant in France (I THINK it's France). Or at least a very different batch then I did. I've got 6 Sony Corp (LeadData) discs, they're about 3-4 years old, and they're all scoring very well.

I have some crappy CompUSA labeled Hitachi Maxell discs. I guess that's what I get for buying the house brand, but if all Hitachi Maxell discs are like these, I don't want anymore. Something tells me there are some good Hitachi Maxell discs though.

The Hitchi Maxell's I tested are REALLY old (hence the aging test), so the quality may have dropped, or it could be Hitachi Maxell sold their crappy discs to CompUSA.

Likely it's similar to RiTEK, some VERY good discs, and some VERY bad discs.

I wonder what gives with Ritek; every, well...almost every, Ritek spindle I have owned has been superb. Out of 10 or so Ritek spindles I have owned, only one contained poor discs.

The newer Ritek CD-Rs are MUCH higher quality then the older ones. Actually, I've reviewed a number of Ritek CD-Rs on my webpage, feel free to check them out, the address is in my sig.

On my LTR-32123S, I have gotten the lowest C1 counts with Imation 32x CMC media. TY 24x (Fuji, re-labeled for 40x) and RiTEK 40x (TDK) have also been quite good.

Edit: these results are pretty simlar to my results on my older burners, but I haven't burned as many of these discs with them; I mainly burn older media on my older burners.

I have a few hundred Hitachi/Maxell 40 & 48x disc's and man they are hot!
Gold tops, says made in Taiwan on the box, ATIP reads Hitachi/Maxell and these burn flat out and error free in every drive I have tested them. Works fantastic in all the LG drives fron 8160 to 8520
