Possible bug with Nero and Sony DRU500AX

Postby themanukuk on Thu Apr 17, 2003 5:15 pm

Ive just discovered something completely by accident but it appears that on my machine anyhow that Nero will not burn DVD-R or +R at 4 speed although it reports it as 4 speed writting the time take is that of a 2.4 speed disk, im running the latest firmware 2.0e of the SonyDRU500AX.

Yet when I use Record DX i can burn a 2.4 speed disk FULL in 29 mins, 16 mins for a x 4 yet in nero both of these are doubled

Has anyone else come across this problem and if they found a fix please tell me :)

IMO Nero stinks at burning DVD,stick with RecordNow DX.I have a DRU-500A with firmware 1.0f and burn DVD+R disks at 4x,Sony is releasing so many new drives and firmware since last October that I'm leary of updating(if it ain't broke don't fix it).

Do you have DMA enabled for your DVD burner?

Yes DMA is enabled this isnt an issue with data coming from the hard drive as the buffer is always at 100%, one other thing ive found out since posting this article is that, if i burning a DVD+RW before i burn a 4 speed it works fine, but if I burn a 4 speed to begin with its slower than a 2 speed disk, takes about 40 mins for the last one, and after further testing its not just limited to Nero now.

Very odd behaviour, i tried turning off power burn but it made absolutely no difference.

Any ideas

Well, you aren't running the latest firmware anymore:

You might want to try 2.0f since it is purported to improve media compatibility, and what you are experiencing could be media related.

Cheers just downloaded and patched it, just about to try a copy see how it goes, fingers crossed, i suppose it could be the cheap media im using (Datawrite (princo) x 4 speed

Ok tried updating the firmware no different, when i do test it burns at 4 x speed fine, but when I do the actual record it just burns at abour 2.5mb a second, and takes 30 mins to complete.

Tried it in Nero and RecordDX same problem.

Im wondering one of the following either :-

Power burn is causing it to slow down, (im running a p4 1.6 with 1.5 gig of ram
The media im using isnt fully supported (Datawrite x 4 speed (princo)
The drive is faulty

Any advise

you said it yourself - try different media

I would continue to lean in the direction that the slow-down is caused by the drive adapting to the media you are using. Can you try some other media like dodecahedron suggested?

If the Sony detects lower quality media, it will automatically step down to a lower speed. Nero has no way of knowing it will step down, so you think it's burning at 4x and is burning at half that speed (or even less). Some of the generic media makers slap a "4x" speed rating on some stuff, but it will only burn at a much slower rate.

According to Hypermicro.com, the Princo 4x won't burn at 4x on the Sony. However the Ritek 4x work fine in the Sony.

I burn Verbatim 4X DVD+R with no problems on my DRU-500A. I have the latest firmware...and burned a full DVD in 16 minutes...There's another possible brand for you to try.
