Sony DRU-500A ability to dance the Multiregion cha cha?

I was pretty psyched up and all ready to go with this drive until I noticed in the small print of the CDRlabs review..

"You can also see from the InfoTool screenshot that the DRU-500A is a RPC-2 DVD drive. This means that the drive's region is stored in the firmware. The drive's region can be changed five times and after that it cannot be changed anymore. As of this review there is no patched firmware available for the DRU-500A that would make the drive region free."

Is this still the case? point is, Ive loads of R1 and R2 disks that need archiving (for personal use of course

If anyone has any ideas I'd really appreciate it (not to mention sony at 250 quid a pop).

Get an inexpensive DVD-ROM that can be made region free (e.g. JLMS/LiteOn 165H/166S), and rip from it? I don't recall anyone coming out with RPC-1 firmware for the Sony.

Well, I think a patch can be expected some day since at least a (many) firmware was released. No significant progress yet though.

The Sony only rips CSS discs at 2x anyway, go with a LiteOn for ripping.
