DVD-ROM Forum

OK, with the number of DVD recordable posts coming in, we've split the DVD sectioin of the forum into "DVD Recordable" and "DVD-ROM". I've moved some of the newer DVD-ROM oriented posts over to the new section, but there are still a number in the DVD Recordble section.

I figured it was time to make the DVD forum selection match the CD forums.

Good move Ian! And you made the right decision for the forum to keep the old posts in!

Can anyone think of a better description than "DVD-ROM Questions?"

Lite-On LTD-163 Quiestion

Postby chubz9 on Sat Jun 14, 2003 11:03 am

Hi Ian,

I have read your review of the LTD-163 drive long time ago, and till now, I guess I want that drive. Have you tested any drive which is better than the LTD-163? Cause I am to purchase a drive soon.

I also noticed that the link of the firmware on your review of the LTD-163 doesn't work now. I even checked the lite-on website, and they don't have any listing of dvd-rom firmwares. That's one of the first things i look for before purchasing an optical drive, if the manufacturers post firmware upgrades regularly.

I just wonder where to get firmwares now for the dvd-drives, cause i think it will not be able to read DVD+R/RW media without it's firmware updated.

I also want a DVD drive, which would be able to read CD-R's burned using the HD-BURN technology. Sanyo said it would be read by drives whose firmwares are upgraded, don't know how true though, but I wanna just ask if you have a drive to recommend to me. Thanks.

LiteOn DVD-ROM drives are now sold through the JVC / LiteOn joint venture JLMS, so you need to go there to get firmware updates:

The XJ-HD166S is the latest LiteOn DVD-ROM drive. It is a good drive, if somewhat noisy. Read through the threads in this forum for various users' opinions on current drive models.
