NEC ND-1100A on uBid?

Postby Abell44 on Mon Apr 14, 2003 1:32 am

uBid has been auctioning the NEC ND-1100A off in lots of 4 for the past week.

The titles shows +R/RW, however, the decscription lists it as a Dual Format drive.
Isn't the ND-1100A a +R/RW only and the upcoming ND-1300A their dual format drive?

http://www.ubid.com/actn/opn/getpage.asp?AuctionId=8551951

I also sent them an email yesterday to see if they could clarify either a error in listing or model number.

Any thoughts on this one?

This particular auction ends at around 8:30 PM PST on Monday,
but they have been putting new lots up with the same title and description up daily.
I'll update the auction links until I hear back from them.

You are right.. uBid is wrong.

I won't buy from uBid. They have horrible customer service. Not to mention, it took them 3 months to ship me a PS. That was the last time I used them.

Thanks for the response, Ian.
I haven't bought from them myself.

Just checked their rating at reseller.com though:
3.86 lifetime rating out of 10, ouch! :o
The low average for their reseller ratings is 4.63

They had a decent rating at bizrate.com, however,
about half of the actual written reviews were about slow ship
or bad customer service.

NEC has really f***d up with their naming of the ND1xx0 drives. Basically you have no guarantee that an 1100A is a + AND - RW when it comes from ebay or online sources. Its ALWAYS +R but depending on the area of the world its marketed and some other voodoo it could or could not be -R/-RW.
Don't bother posting me some european link showing it supports -R/-RW, there are DEFINITELY american 1100As that DO NOT support -R/-RW.

This is the reponse I received from Ubid regarding the ND-1100A.
(Personal names edited out)

We have received your request for assistance regarding lot #8551491.
After an initial investigation, we have determined that the correct description is as the main title lists,
a +R/RW format DVD writer.
If you would like to see a more detailed description of the product you can go to our suppliers web site http://www.hypermicro.com/store/index.htm.

Thank you for your patience in this matter.

Thank You,
Ubid Customer Care
Research Dept.

However, they are still continuing to auction these drives with the exact same description

From an auction ending today:

Product Description

Features and Benefits
NEC has launched the NEC MultiSpin ND-1100A, one of the world's first
DVD drive able to write both DVD-R and DVD+R media at 4x speed.

The ND-1100A provides a complete solution for data backup,
storage and distribution - from sharing films and music to archiving a
massive 4.7 Gb/s of content on one DVD disk alone.

It removes the compatibility issues that have slowed the take-up of DVD re-writers by
incorporating all eight optical storage formats in one product.

Competing standards in the DVD re-writing market have left hardware manufacturers,
dealers and consumers wondering which horse to back.
The ND-1100A removes the guesswork once and for all,
enabling end-users to create disks for play-back in virtually all
DVD video players and DVD ROM drives with no compromise in performance.

The ND-1100A delivers the fastest and most reliable performance at both reading
and writing media of any multi-format DVD drive available today.
It supports 2.4x DVD+RW; 2x DVD-RW; 16x CD-R and 10x CD-RW recording,
and reads DVD-ROM at maximum 12x and CD-Rom at maximum 40x,
outstripping competitor solutions emphatically. This performance enables the ND-1100A
to record one hour of DVD Video in just 15 minutes, for example.

NEC ND-1100A is a 4x DVD+R/4x DVD-R writer drive, yes, but the present version of NEC ND-1100A is able to write to DVD+R/DVD+RW only and not to DVD-R/DVD-RW. The "dual" version is thus renamed to ND-1300A.

That ND-1100A is a +/- drive is an outdated information. It was true sometime last year but wrong now.

NEC has the following DVD recordable PC drives on the market right now.

ND-1000A: 2.4x DVD+R, 2.4x DVD+RW
ND-1100A: 4x DVD+R, 2.4x DVD+RW
ND-1300A: 4x DVD+R, 2.4x DVD+RW, 4x DVD-R, 2x DVD-RW
