Double Density CD-R

I was at Fry's today and saw these Double Density CD-R's that are Sony branded and made in Taiwan. They hold 1.3GB compared to the regular 700MB CD-R. However, on the back it stated that they could only be used on double density CD-RW drives, which I have not seen or heard of. Can someone shed some light on this technology?

This is a proprietary Sony format that is not supported by any other manufacturer. See Sony Double Density CD-RW CRX200E/A1.

It has never gone anywhere, which is not surprising due to its lack of compatibility and high media costs.

In my opinion, if you need extra capacity, skip this and go to DVD.

lol I remember 5Mb Hard Drives mate, and I'm sure they were smaller than that as well. 1.3Gb HDDs were commonplace around 1995.

Personally I think this format is a waste of time with DVDR becoming increasingly cheap. But good spot

It looks as if Optorite/Accesstek will be the first manufacturer to use Sanyo's HD-BURN technology (mentioned here) for their DVD±RW/CD-RW drive, the DD0203. Here are the features mentioned on Optorite's and Accesstek's websites:

HD-BURN: record twice the capacity of CD-R media;
8 MB internal buffer;
Motorized easy touch tray loading;

yes, as an additional feature in a DVD burner, it sounds nice (like plextor's new CD recorder). neat idea.
but just a CD recorder with the HD-Burn (again, like the plex) can't compete with a DVD burner, such a product wouldn't succeed.

I have recently bought sony double density 1.3b media (50 pieces).
When i tried it with my cd writer it did not work. Now i want to buy a dvd writer which can also write on sony double density 1.3gb media.
Can this Optorite/Accesstek DD0203 write on sony double density 1.3gb media?

No. Only Sony Double Density drives can read/write to that media.

Hi, i am still not completely convinced that optorite DD0203 cannot write on sony double density media. The sony double density media 1.3gb has smaller pitch than normal cdr thats why it provides 1.3gb. Optorite DD0203 HD-Burn works the same way by making the pitch smaller than the normal cdr so doesnt that mean that both are similar and it can write on sony double density 1.3gb cdr. If not have anyone tried it or its just a guess that it cannot write.

Edit: that thread said that they are shrinking pit size, not track pitch. Sounds like the Sony DD discs won't work with HD-Burn. Sorry.

Note: The pit lenght of sony double density 1.3gb is the same as the HD-BURN pit lenght shrinking 0.62um. which means both of them are allowing more data by the same technology so why wouldnt the sony double density media which is 0.62um work with optorite DD0203 which is changing the normal cds pit length to 0.62. so it means it is able to write at that pit lenght, so it should be able to write on sony double density 1.3gb media.
