GeForce FX 5200

Looks like the el-cheapo GeForce FX 5200's are shipping:

Anyone have any experience with these? Personally, I'm waiting for the 5200 Ultra.

Even my GeForce4 Ti4200 looks better than that.

Only a 250MHz GPU? For brand new technology, that sucks. My Radeon 8500 has a GPU speed of 275MHz, and my Radeon can be considered old!

I've been researching PSUs and the "how many watts do I need" is a recurring question. It appears to me that a lot of these new monster graphics cards simply need bigger power supplies. Can anybody add to or correct this observation?

Yup, simple as that. The bigger cards require more system power, including electrical power. The fans required to cool this card also take up some extra power.

I guess Leadtek rules eh? I didn't know they used such large heatsinks until I saw a different picture that you posted a couple of weeks ago of the Ti 4600.

Two questions about the Leadtek cards:
1. Do they come overclocked out of the box?
2. Are they loud (due to the fans)?

1. They can be overclocked with the Winfast utility that comes with the video card. Their cards usually ship with stock GPU and Memory speeds.

2. The single fan on my Leadtek GeForce4 Ti4200 128MB video card isn't loud at all. The fan itself is smaller in diameter than a case fan, so it produces a lot less sound than those 80mm case fans.

Thanks BuddhaTB, I'm really considering getting a Leadtek when the $ is available. Could be another 3 months or so, but I want to ask if you would recommend it above other GF4 brands? Or, said differently, if you didn't go Leadtek, which brand would you recommend looking at?

When I was deciding what brand GeForce4 Ti4200 I was planning to buy last summer, I narrowed down the choices to either Leadtek and Gainward. I went with Leadtek, due to their huge heat sinks and fan and also because mwave had it for cheaper. The good thing about Gainward, is some of their high end GF4 cards are already overclocked. You just have to look at the different model numbers, but if you send me the link I can tell you which ones are overclocked. I would decide between those two brands, since they are both reliable and show very good bench mark scores. Since I'm using a Leadtek now, I would highly recommend them.
