this will be the first firmware upgrade i have seen for the DRU500AX drive; hopefully this fixes the slow occasional CDR burnspeed issue...

So this is for the DRU500A, correct? Man, that's quite a leap from my last update (1.0g). Is it worth going from 1.0g to 2.0e? If it fixes the issue of not burning 4X with 4X media consistently, however, say no more cause I'm all over it! I paid double last time for Ritek 4X DVD-R media, and less than 8% actually burned at the rated speed :(

Yes, this firmware works fine with the DRU-500A.
I have burned a number of discs (mainly DVD+R discs, since I tend to save my DVD-R media for the A05 in my other PC) since ugrading to 2.0e.
I haven't tried 4X media yet though, so I can't comment on that.
Burners only:

Plextor PX-716A same TLA

yes, the firmware works fine on dvd-r/+r discs, but there remains this issue where the drive intermittently burns CD-R discs at like 4x instead of 24x... it is extremely frustrating and doesn't happen every time using same media.

I've only used mine to verify that the cdr function works and make a couple of test disks on older media to see how clean the burn is. It did 24x on some very old USA TDK certified + media and had very low c-1 rates.
Other then that I'm only going to use it to burn DVD's so it's never been a issue for me and probably most of the folks using it. I use my 52x cdrw for that kind of work.
