Media Compatibility With CD-RW Drives - Which Media Is Best?

General discussion about recordable CD, DVD and BD media and write quality testing.

Postby cfitz on Sat Apr 05, 2003 2:44 pm

What was the brand (as opposed to the manufacturer CMC - we want both pieces of information), and what was the speed rating? Also, when you say they burned with no errors, what exactly do you mean? Make sure that they show 100% green in CD Speed's Scan Disc test to be reported in this thread. Finally, what drive and what firmware version??

<edit> oops... didn't see the drive and firmware in the subject (it is hard to see up there in such small print). But could you still supply the other information as well?</edit>

oops sorry ...
The Manufacturer info only says CMC Magnetics.

The Splindle is not labeled at all either. These were genaric CDR labeled as 48X capable. They were cheap and I haven't had even one of 50 go bad yet so ...

Sorry I guess this was kindof a useless post :-(

No it wasn't. Others have reported results for "Generic/unbranded" as well. Naturally it is best if the discs are identifiable enough that others can purchase them, but even if that isn't possible, you have still provided information about how your LG drive does on CMC media, which is useful by itself. Don't worry. 8)

I have a doubt...

Postby Manatu on Mon Apr 07, 2003 7:59 pm

I read in this forum that Memorex cds where manufactured by Tayo Yunden, but i bought today a spindle of them (80min 52x, saying "made in Europe") but they were manufactured from "Moser Baer India". how many companies make the Memorex cds? What is the quality of the cdrs made from Moser Baer India?
(This topic seems to be the most apropriate to make this question, since everybody is talking about the cds and their manufacturers, that´s why i didn´t made a new one in the forum root...)

They seem to be made by the lowest bidder that week or something. I have seen made in India, made in Taiwan, and made in Japan on the labels. Mostly lately they have been the taiwan ones that are Riteks.
If you want the TY ones make sure it says made in Japan on the label.
I just used up a spindle of 50 TY/memorex cdr's, they were rated at 40 and that's the fastest they would burn at. If they say 48 on them they will do 52x, at least in my 52x lite On.

This is for media available in Germany, with some applicability to other countries in Europe.

There may be other manufacturers suppling Memorex in the US.

i tried one memorex

Postby Manatu on Tue Apr 08, 2003 7:18 pm

I tried one memorex from MBI @52x with my lg-gce 8520b 1.04. The scandisc test was ok (100% good) and the Kprobe C1/C2 test was like this:
Image

It is the first time i made a test with Kprobe, but it doesn´t look to bad. (I think...) What do you think? Are these MoserBaer Any good?

The criterion for inclusion in this thread is a 100% good (green) scan in CD Speed Scan Disc. CD Doctor/WSES/K's Probe tests are not acceptable.

In this particular case, I believe even your K's Probe test results are not accurate. You have used a DVD-ROM drive to run the test. And although K's Probe does report results when a disc is measured in a DVD-ROM, the results do not appear to be accurate. The errors are greatly underreported. You should test in a LiteOn CD-RW drive for accurate measurements with CD Doctor/WSES/K's Probe. I know, I have both a 166S and an LTR-48246S Take a look at the following:

I was being induced to a wrong analisys with the LTD166S.
But you may have a lot of C1 errors and some C2 and still have a 100% good in CD Speed Scandisk. Doesn´t that count too? or is it possible to trust scandisk only? By having a 100% good scan may i say that memorex made by MBI is a good media (at least for my recorder)?

If the CD Speed Scan Disc result is 100% green, then you may include the result in this thread as good media on your drive at the speed you burned. A 100% green Scan Disc result is required, and that is the only thing that is required. (The one exception is if you burn in TAO mode and do not finalize the disc. In that case the very last block only may be red, since this isn't an actual error.)

I have an Acer/BenQ 1208A (12x maximum write) with 9.CC firmware

The following media have been serving me successfully:
Kodak Ultima Silver/Gold ....... 12x (no surprises there, but they're discontinued :( )
Verbatim Super-Azo ....... 12x BUT NO SLOWER!! Much better results, surprisingly, although still "borderline"? (encountered 1 or 2 recoverable errors, but that could be because i have a dusty DVD drive which i did the error check in).

The following media have been causing problems:
Verbatim Super-Azo ....... 8x FAILS !!! (many errors per disc) - must be burnt at 12x !!

So, slower is not always better. I think these Verbatims are manufactured for longevity from higher burn speeds??

Thanks, ben-xo, do you know the rated speed (it should say on each disc) for the Kodaks and Verbatims? I'm guessing the Kodaks are rated 12; the Verbatims could be anywhere from 24X-52X

Question: how do you sell 12x media for more (4.50 Euro/10) than 32x TYs (Verbatim Pastel slimline: 4 Euro/10) ?
Answer: add a 10x wallet to the package (sleeves, crystal box).
I was curious and bought a pack. Surprise: they're really good at the Smartburn limit.
Code: Select all
LiteOn LTR 48246S
Firmware SS0B...........SKC/SKC 80min 1-12x ....................32X

ScanDisk all green, C1 average/max: 0.8/10 (both K's Probe and CD Doctor).
Here the ATIPS mostly from CDRIdentifier:
Code: Select all
ATIP:              97m 26s 24f
Disc Manufacturer: SKC Co., Ltd.
Reflective layer:  Dye (Long strategy; e.g. Cyanine, Azo etc.)
Media type:        CD-Recordable
Recording Speeds:  min. unknown - max. unknown
nominal Capacity:  702.83MB (79m 59s 74f / LBA: 359849)
  SMART-BURN Speed Limit = 32X

More on SKC

Postby MediumRare on Sat Apr 12, 2003 1:01 pm

Code: Select all
LiteOn LTR 48246S
Firmware SS0B...........SKC/SKC 80min 1-12x ....................48X

I don't normally override Smartburn, but I just had to try with these disks, especially since we're seeing a lot of SKC's here recently. Burned @48x (the drive slowed to 32x for the last 5 min). And what a result- :o this media is awesome for nominal 12x!!! C1 average/max: 0.15/10. Incidentally: this is the package I bought.

[edit]I added a scan of this burn: http://www.cdrlabs.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=61396#61396 to the K's Probe thread as an example of a good burn.[/edit]

I guess I'll have to try the Verbatim DataLife Pastels 32x (TY) at 48x. They were super at the Smartburn limit (40x).

Just pretend I didn't have Nero set to show the current speed.

I didn't see any signs of a different write quality, in contrast to the Mexico DataLife(CMC): you can see exactly where the brakes were put on here. :o
