Looking for a quiet burner..

Postby hightower on Mon Mar 31, 2003 8:32 am

Hi

Im looking for a quiet burner, since my system is very quiet (antec truepower supply and no fans over 19db). I already have the lite-on 52x which sounds like a jet taking off :o , so I'll be taking that back to the store. What are my options? Thanks in advance..

LG-GCE 8520B. I can't even hear it spin up, and I've gone out of my way to make my system as quiet as possible (silent PSU and HSF). Highly recommended!

I can't hear my LTR-48125W at all. Maybe that's because of my two 48 dBA fans. Anyways, I like loud systems, better cooling in general.

The Lite On drives have a high pitched small whine when they are burning and make different woosh type noises as they spin up and change speeds for reading things. It's not bad but not totaly quiet either. the newer 166 dvd drives are even worse till they settle down.
Friend had the LG, I think it was quiet, but he liked the media compatility of the Lite on and what it can do better so he got one.
People here really like the way the LG's are built, some have large buffers I think also, and every one who has one says they are quiet so for you it would probaly be the best choice.

Oh yeah, The Aopen 48x12x50 is the LOUDEST BURNER EVER. I use it on a dell comp which is pretty quiet. The burner is so loud.

I have 3 LG burners and they're all pretty quiet... and I have 2 goldstar CD-ROM drives... one is quiet(circa 1999) and the other(slot loading circa 1996) is kind of clunky, but not obnoxious.

The consensus seems to be LG, and I agree. (By the way, that wasn't intended to rhyme). :)

I have the Samsung 348B and I have to tell you...they have something inside this drive...even at 48X the drive is Quiet...no question...it makes my older Plextor sound like a tank! I am really happy with this drive.

I know this isn't what you want to hear, but if you have a Lite-On burner, you should be happy. They're the best out there in my opinion. I'm using one in my Gateway which is fairly loud, I guess. If you need another drive for that system, fine, but keep the Lite-On for something else. Taking back a Lite-On is like a crime.
