DVD-ROMs that can play DVD-R/RWs AND DVD+R/RWs???????

Postby death2all on Wed Mar 26, 2003 9:18 pm

Are there any DVD-ROMs that can play/read DVD-R/RWs AND DVD+R/RWs? i've been holding off getting a DVD-ROM for some time, but ive found the perfect drive: the Samsung SM-348 (or SM-352). it plays DVDs at 16x and ReWrites at 24x, but it cant read DVD+R/RWs (only DVD-R/RWs). I know Sony makes one, but its sorta mediocre. thanx for any help.

A good number of drives that don't officially claim DVD+R/RW support test out compatible anyway, thanks to the similarity of DVD+R/RW disc characteristics to those of standard DVD-ROM discs. Here is a list of compatible drives:

There is no rip speed limitation for the 166S ( and i assume it's the same for the 165 ) . I think Burninfool has ripped a Dual layer DVD and in this case you cannot expect more than 8X max rip speed .

Toshiba DVD-ROM drives supports too officially both formats .

Okay, just in case that is a real question (since English isn't your native tongue), BTW means "by the way"

Poor Ian. He doesn't rate. He's just some tester/reviewer!  8)

Yes, that second link I gave you indicates that many drives that aren't officially supporting +R/RW do so anyway. Even the Pioneer drives. :o

Ah, so it was real question. :D No offense intended, and I hope none taken. 8) I just thought maybe you were making a joke by juxtaposing the actual phrase and the abbreviation, in the form of a question. It ends up being kind of a good joke even if you didn't intend it to be. But I in no way meant to criticize nor ridicule you or your command of the English language. I really do respect people who learn foreign languages and converse with others using those non-native languages. And I understand that the fine points of a foreign language are easy to confuse. I'm sure the Japanese get a good laugh out my mangling of their language.

Don't worry :D . I had understood very well that my unintentionnal joke was funny and there was no intention to offend in your reaction . Just a natural reaction .
