DVD Movie playback

Postby PaulDiston on Thu Feb 06, 2003 5:59 am

When I play back a movie it is rather jumpy and kind of slow. I have my CDRW drive on the same IDE channel. Would this cause a problem when playing back a movie?

make sure DMA is enabled for your drive.

check out the FAQ:

Yes it could cause that problem. You should never have the source and the destination on the same IDE channel. Some times you can get away with it but more then likely it will impact the performance.

I don't believe Paul was talking about trying to copy from the DVD-ROM to the CD-RW drive. If he was, then yes, the speed of the copy might be affected by having the source and destination drives on the same IDE channel*. But Paul was talking about simply playing a DVD movie in his drive. And in that situation there is no problem with having another optical drive on the same IDE channel.

Let's see how he makes out with dodecahedron's advice.

* Assuming that he was trying to copy a CD or some files from a DVD data disc. Naturally a DVD movie can not be copied directly from a DVD drive to a CD-RW drive at all.

hey dodeca
thanks for the DMA instructions. came across that problem myself and worked like a charm ;) i have a question tho - is there still a way to manually assign drive letters to my cd/dvd drives? after i reinstalled my secondary IDE, XP swapped my cdrw drive letter and my dvdrom drive letter. i remember doing it before i started using XP, but i cant find that option anywhere now. any suggestions? thanks!

i'm no expert on winXP but i think i can guide you through:
right-click My Computer -> Manage
then: Storage -> Disk Management
in the lower-right pane, find the square that corresponds to the drive you want to change and right-click -> Change Drive Letter and Paths...
click on the Change button, in the pull-down menu on the right change the letter and click OK. Confirm with Yes.
then you can close the Computer Management window.

worked for me - just changed my CD-ROM from F to H. :)
