Verbatim cdr/rw or what?

I bought this Verbatim 48x12x48 cd rw drive from Office max the other day. When I opened it, the drive said 48x16x48x on it rather than the former. also, it doesn't say Vebatim anywhere on the drive. I was wondering if I got a diffent drive than I was supposed to. The Model is 4816P and number is 051. I did a search on that number and got something called a BenQ cd drive. I am now thinking that BenQ made the drive and it got mixed up into a Verbatim box. Anyway, I'm not entirely happy with the thing because it is too loud. I got this program called aida32 that gives you information about your computer hardware and software, but this particular drive had ???? marks by it. Anyway, I wonder if anyone can enlighten me as to what is going on with this drive.

There was no mix-up in the box. Verbatim uses drives from other companies in their CD-RW products. Since Verbatim does not make any CD-RW hardware, they must purchase CD-RW drives from other companies and sell it under their Verbatim name. From past experiences, a lot of people have been unsatisfied with Benq drives as they are of cheap quality. I would return your drive and pick up something differen.t The best would be Lite-On. Go check out the Hot Deals section and see if you can find anything to your liking. If there's any further questions, feel free to ask.

Bought a Verbatim 522452A about a month ago from local OfficeMax store, it was substituted for a sale they had on Verbatim 481248 which after MIR's would net out at $9.98, if Verbatim comes thru on their $30 rebate. It is a Lite-0n drive with SmartBurn etc. and was Manufactured 10/02, so assume firmware is the latest. In any event even if I don't get the rebate from Verbatim I still feel that I got a good deal at $40 and the drive works great. Haven't burned too many CD-r's on it yet (about 12)as I am converting some old LP's and cleaning them up to burn to CD's, but one's I've burned sound good. Talked to several members on the forum and the ones that were familiar wit the Verbatim 522452 say that they are Lite-ons. You might want to return the 481248 model and check on sales of either Cendyne or Verbatim models 522452 as these both use Lite-ons. I believe Cendyne is the parent Co. of Verbatim. In any event the Lite-on would be better than the Benq.
