Pioneer Supports DVD+RW

Postby Kennyshin on Wed Mar 12, 2003 12:14 am

The Computer Times of South Korea reports that Pioneer is going to release DVD+RW writer drives in June. Both Samsung and LG will be a little faster than that.

pioneer give up ?

Postby vbl117 on Wed Mar 12, 2003 7:13 am

what a shame ! Next time Pioneer 'll think more before creating/promoting a new media format . I guess it is too late for Pioneer to enter successfully the DVD+R DVD+RW burner market with Ricoh and Lite-On DVD+R DVD+RW burners incoming . LG and Samsung will release their DVD+R DVD+RW burners faster and they'll be probably cheaper than Pioneer DVD+R DVD+RW burner .

Thanks for all info kennyshin :D .

WOW!

Well that makes me even more glad that I just returned my brand new Panasonic pro scan DVD changer for a Sony DVD player.
I wanted something future-proof. The Panny didn't play DVD+R...

The Sony plays my DVD-R and DVD+R discs (also plays
DVD-RW/DVD+RW not tested by me personally, but confirmed).
Burners only:
Pioneer DVR-115D
Pioneer DVR-111D
Plextor PX-716A TLA0304
Plextor PX-716A same TLA

LiteOn 52246S 52X CD-RW
LiteOn 52246S (another)
LiteOn 52327S 52X CD-RW
TDK 40X USB 2.0 CD-RW
TEAC CD-W540E 40X CD-RW

Well this puts a hard kick to the DVD-R format. With MS a member of the +RW alliance now and all the supporters of -R now begining to produce +R format drives....we may be getting closer to seeing an end to the multi-format battle.

I certainly don't think -R is going anywhere anytime soon, but I do think this move may indicate that DVD-R may be heading towards being phased out with +R drives becoming the norm.

Your sentiments echo mine!

I wonder if DVD-R discs will always be supported going forward, as far as readability is concerned, by standard (i.e. non BlueRay) DVD players?
That would be my ONLY concern...
