Philips 724AT: does it play DVD-R? EDIT: Bought Sony 715P

I am not too happy that my Panasonic CP67 DVD changer
does NOT appear to play DVD+R.

I am considering returning it and getting a Philips 724AT instead (which is only a single disc player), so I can hopefully play both DVD+R AND
DVD-R.

Does anyone know if the 724AT plays DVD-R?
I have read about +R from several people...

What is the difference between the 724 and the 724AT?
Is it the Sage Faroujda deinterlacer in the latter?

Someone mentioned that he got Verbatim DVD+R to work with the Panasonic CP67. I will test it tonight with my HP DVD+Rs bought on sale last week and Maxell DVD+Rs that I got cheap from my brother's friend.

I really want to keep the Panasonic if possible, since it is a changer, is black, has a high quality deinterlacer (think the Philips may have the same one, but not sure) and works great for DVDs and DVD-Rs.

Did you try here http://www.vcdhelp.com/forum/ to see if it is reported to work or not. Lots of good info there and you can look up all kinds of drives if that one doesn't do it.
I have a Haier HD700 that I have put the OFFA firmware for the Sampo 631 on and it will now play pretty much all the different types of media as long as it's burned properly for it to recognise it.
I also have a little Koss portable that seems to support most media and files without help. It's a Koss 216 and they were sold at Target, Target.com might still sell them.
Also there is a Koss 270? 5 disk changer that a local store chain had for less then 100 that Probably can play them but I don't know for sure.
All of my players I have been using will do - it's the + that has problems on mine.

Thanks. The first thing I tried was the player listings and DVD players forum at dvdrhelp.com, but there weren't many reports on the 724AT, only on the 724.

In any case, the CP67 works with DVD+R (Verbatim at least), according to someone on another site.
He sent me details on software used. I will try it today...

I tried three more DVD+Rs (twp HPs and one Maxell), and they don't work
either. I used both Stomp and Nero.

My Apex plays at least the Stomp ones.

My Panasonic CP67 plays ALL my DVD-Rs.
This leads me to think it is a media issue.
Maybe Verbatim DVD+R is substantially different from other DVD+Rs, somehow.

I am thinking of getting a Philips 724AT and if it plays all my discs, I may just live without a changer, and with a silver player (everything else is black)...
I'll eat the $10.99 shipping on the CP67...

At least the 724AT will be more future-proof: If one media format 'dies' in a few years, it won't matter...
In addition, it will allow me to keep getting DVD+Rs if I find another cheap (83 cent a disc this time) deal on HP discs...
I will be able to buy whichever media I can get the best deals on, plus

You might want to check out you area and see if the Koss 270 I mentioned is available. It might do what you want for a very good price and is a changer.
I'd make demo DVD with all the things you can't do now so you can test whatever you find in the store before you buy it to make sure.

I assume the Koss isn't progressive scan?

My Apex plays DVD+R; I just wanted a progressive scan that plays everything.
My Toshiba plays DVD-R.

I upgraded to the Panasonic to get progressive scan.
I can still return it.

I am just getting conflicting reports about DVD+R with the CP67S
What makes matters worse, is that different burning software seems to burn DVD-R (and DVD+R) discs differently.

I want to ensure that I am burning FULLY compliant discs, so that ANY future DVD player that plays recordable DVD media will be able to play them...

No it's not. The Cyberhome 500 is but it doesn't do 5 disks, it's only a single. the video quality is right up there with my Pioneer 525 in normal mode. My TV isn't HD do I can't say about progressive. It does play dvd+ and - so far if it's burned properly, I know becuase I have one. You can also change the region to all if you want and it will play PAL disk properly including amorphic on NTSC sets. Best Buy used to sell them for 79 bucks. You can still get them through http://www.cyberhome.com/ look for their online store. I think they want about 120 through the site, Amazon is sposed to still have them also.
They have also been very responsive about updates and customer tech support, so much that they are replacing or repairing some of the units that had HD problems with certain sets even after the warranty is out.
If you have a Best Buy near you might want to go look if your interested to see if they have any left or a demo, great units for the price. They do JPG and mp3 also but no MPG so far.

After reading a bunch of very positive (highest rated at dvdhelp.com I think) user reviews on the Sony 715P (one of which compared it to the JVC 500 and Philips 724AT that I was interested in) I bought it for $120 + $7.20 tax after PM.

It is very small. Not quite as thin as the CP67 (close though), but about half as deep.
It plays all the DVD+Rs (Nero and Stomp) that the CP67 didn't, so I now know it wasn't my fault.
It even plays some old DVD-Rs burned with the old Nero that my Toshiba (which plays DVD-Rs) didn't play. I had to use Stomp for the Toshiba to play them.

The Sony is a single disc player. Not a real big deal, except for two disc VCDs and three disc SVCD videos, and it might not have the Sage Faroujda deinterlacer (not sure), BUT it is progressive scan, highly rated, SUPER quick to recognize discs and plays CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD+R (and DVD-RW and DVD+RW; not tested by me).
Also plays both VCD and SVCD, and of course MP3 CD-Rs/CD-RWs.

It doesn't do DVD MP3 discs. I can use my PC (hooked up to my stereo) for that...

I am a very happy camper now.

That was a top unit last year, it sold for 600 when it first came out I didn't think it could do MP3's but maybe it was added later. The first Sony players couldn't do cdr's or cdrw's so it sounds like they got tired of losing business.
My sisters hubby has one and it looks awesome in progressive mode on their vega set.
The ony unit I know of right now that does dvd mp3's is that little Koss portable, it's amzing what that little unit can play. The chinese players with the modified firmware that was originally for the Sampo 631 can too but not till you add the new firmware.

I just got finished packing the CP67 for its return.

I didn't realize that the 715P used to sell for $600. Wow!
In any case, it looks great, takes up little real estate. My
two non progressive scan players (Apex AD-703 and nice Toshiba
SD-4109X) look huge in comparison....

I got worried about the audio at first - there was none.
It turns out that by default the optical and coaxial out are both disabled. I found the menu, by reading the owner's manual, and enabled Digital and dts output.

My DVD-Rs and DVD+Rs are detected and start playing in a mere second or two. MUCH faster than the CP67 detected DVD-Rs.

It is a great player... Going to try some VCDs and SVCDs now.

Apearently there were 2 models, the first one has a very similar number and looks the same but I think it doesn't support cdr-mp3 and the stuff yours does. They look identical from what I could see of the picture on the Sony site. I'd bet they did a update, added the new feature easily and lowered the price a bit.

According to one poster (who did an A/B comaprison) at avsforum.com, apparently the CP72 (which is slightly better than the CP67 I am returning) showed no noticeable improvement over the 715P, only in one area, and he said it doesn't happen often and you have to be looking for it.

So the only thing I am losing is the changer ability.
Most of the time the five discs I have in my changer aren't the ones I will play next anyway.
The only time it would matter would be for VCD and SVCD viewing (multiple discs for one home video), and I prefer to use my Apex for VCDs/SVCDs and leave the progressive scan Sony for DVD use only, where it will shine.
Why wear out a nice player for VCDs, when I have another one that will play VCDs just as well.
