LG GCC-4480B review?

Postby MikeTR on Mon Mar 03, 2003 1:38 pm

Anyone seen a review of the LG GCC-4480B combo drive on the web? I'd like to see how it compares to the Samsung, since I can get either one for about the same price. Don't even know if it comes in black or has (future) Mt.Rainier support.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I bought one on Friday.. whole weekend tried to burn faster than 32x on any media - TY, Prodisc, Ritek, Verbatim (all 48x certified and succesfully burned on Liteon 48246).. most of medias fell back to 16x CLV, TY burned 32x PCAV.. otherwise drive works fine (reading DVDs, reading/writing CDRWs). Burned CD quality is good, no C2 errors and <10 C1 errors.

When I start CD burning, the drive spins for 10-15 sec (making media calibration I think) and then the burning speed falls.

I contacted LG tech support, not very helpful..

Anyone has some experiences with this drive?

After buying various media I tried once more.. 690 MB ISO burned in DAO mode

TDK 40x 80min. (Ritek)
started writing at 20x, rised to 39.7x, at 75% dropped to 32x, 24x and finally 16x

EMTEC 48x 80min. (Moser Baer)
started writing at 20x, rised to 42x, at 80% dropped to 32x, 24 and finally 16x

Sentinel 48x 80min. (Tayio Yuden DX)
started writing at 20x, rised to 39.7x, at 65% dropped to 16x

Verbatim 48x 80min. (Mitsubishi)
started writing at 20x, rised to 41x, at 70% dropped to 16x

Proformance 48x 80min. (Prodisc)
started writing at 16x and stayed to the end

Simulation goes to 48x flawlessly, burned media have "maps" and "circles" at various radius, all media have zero c2 errors..

If I burn at <32x, no drops in writing speed.

Is this faulty drive or firmware with miserable media compatibility?

This is a VERY common problem among all LG burners (very narrow media compatibility). To make the case worst, LG does not release new firmware very often...

There isn't any problem with your drive, I notice the same problem with my LG 52xCDRW too. The default burn speed seem to be 32x if I insert very rare disc into it. Otherwise, the speed would be somewhere along 40x to 48x.

I don't know. It looks like you have tried a bunch of media. I would think that at least some of those should be doing better than what you are seeing. LG drives in general seem to do better with some of those media than what you are seeing, according to the media compatibility thread:

Maybe you do have a bad drive.

I got new drive exchanged at distributor today.. will see, if things get better. I can understand limited compatibility of some media and LG, but I tried a reasonable variety of them.. from quality-wise to cheap-crap.

I am really curious about coming review of this drive..

So.. it was faulty drive, definitely! But there are still issues..

Sentinel/Tayo Yuden DX (48x) drive burned at 40x PCAV, did not reach 48x, no C2 errors, almost zero C1 errors, no visual "maps" or "circles" on the disc

E-Proformance/Prodisc (48x) drive burned at 48x CAV, did reach 48x, no C2 errors, a little more C1 errors than TY

I don't have more brands of media at the moment, will update ASAP.

I wonder what is the problem with TY (I use them almost exclusively)..

Well, that is much better. Good to hear things are working now. The new drive's 40x limit on the 48x TY media may just be the LG being picky about media compatibility as Raz0rX mentioned. Anyway, that is what it sounds like, because the burns are good and reaching rated speed or very near to rated speed.

Tests with the Polaroid brand Plasmon CD-R (40x-rated) we tested here in Seoul:

Lite-On 52x - 52x
LG GCC-4480B - 40x

Tests with various Ritek-made media showed similar results.

BTW, now I work for a company very closely related to Lite-On IT. That does not mean I like Lite-On more than LG.

I tested a Lite-On slim combo (CD-R/DVD-ROM) drive today as well. It could read any DVD recordable media I tested.

Nice, any chance on (advance) info on the new Lite-On Combo drive and maybe the upcoming Dual DVD writer?

We'll keep our eyes peeled for sure.....

Wait for a firmware update to come out and see if that helps with media compatibility. I must admit, the newer LG drives don't compare to the older drives in terms of writing at full speeds with a wide range of blank CD's. Although, at least the newer LG drives can write to all different kinds of media, which cannot be said about Lite-On drives (i.e. CMC media).

I have tested some media this night..

Verbatim SuperAzo 48x (Mitsubishi) burned at 40x PCAV, no C2 errors

EMTEC 48x (Moser Baer) burned at 48x CAV, no C2 errors

Superdisc (?) 48x (CMC) burned at 48x CAV, no C2 errors

Even at crap CMC disc drive was able to burn full 48x CAV with no errors.. when I get home, I put the Liteon drive into machine and measure C1 error rate (I wish CD Doctor worked with LG..).

Some media tests at Liteon 48246 with CD Doctor, scanned at max. speed 48x..

Sentinel / Tayio Yuden 80min. 48x, burned at 40x
C1 Min. 0 Max. 6 Avg 0.090
C2 Min. 0 Max. 0 Avg 0.000

TDK / Ritek 80min. 48x, burned at 48x
C1 Min. 0 Max. 8 Avg 0.120
C2 Min. 0 Max. 0 Avg 0.000

Eproformance / Prodisc 80min. 48x, burned at 48x
C1 Min. 0 Max. 15 Avg 1.437
C2 Min. 0 Max. 0 Avg 0.000

EMTEC / Moser Baer 80min. 48x, burned at 48x
C1 Min. 0 Max. 12 Avg 0.971
C2 Min. 0 Max. 0 Avg 0.000

To my surprise, this drive reads DVD-RAM without any problem! I tried also 24x CDRW from Memorex / Infodisc, but this is totally crap.. full of C2 errors..
