Well, I found a place to park some images, so I do want to show the dramatic improvement that the firmware upgrade from SS0A to SS0B on the LTR 48246S made with this media. All checks were done with CD Doctor on my LTR 48246S at maximum read speed, which is ca. 32x for VCDs. I know there are a lot of skeptics about the utility of RWs, and the error rate that CD Doctor shows with most RW-media is not very reassuring (especially if you can get 50 CDRs (that work) for 94 cents like Spazmogen). The Intenso (Nan Ya) disk with SS0A firmware is typical (12x write):

Image

This burn is fine, but I wouldn't trust it for longterm storage.
An update to SS0B brings dramatic improvements:

After the initial spike, this is better than most CDRs I've tested (albeit at a lower burn speed). I can post images for 10x (even lower error rate) and 16x (unusable) if there is any interest.

Anyone with a LiteOn 6-series drive who uses rewritables (or wants to) should definitely upgrade to the new firmware. cfitz- is that an argument for you ?

It is certainly a good argument for you and anyone else using this CD-RW media. That's the kind of improvement that makes a firmware update definitely worthwhile. It looks like the LiteOn engineers are doing a good job improving write quality. Thanks for sharing your results.

For me personally, though, I will probably remain lazy and leave my drive alone, simply because it is doing fine with the media I normally use.

Opsss! I thought CD Doctor is great enough. Sorry for that. I'll update it  .

1 more doubt. Why my result never get an update in the Wizard's cdr compability list? It is because I'm using CD Doctor :) ?

Hi Killer, did you try burning those discs at a slower speed and checking for errors? They may be error free at 24X, 16X, or 8X. Then again, maybe not.

Why I should bother burning them at a slower speed?? What's the point?
I need error free discs at the higher speed possible.I have just trayed them with Creation [1x-24x],which they burn at 32x & are error free.

That's the point of this thread. :) To find the maximum burn speed for discs in certain CD-RW drives. You don't have to burn the discs at a slower speed, but you never know, you could get better results if you do.

Many many thanks to RazOrX! He has been sending me private messages with results for the LG GCE-8520B and the new Mitsumi CR-487ETE (52X24X52). So far, the Mitsumi looks like a pretty good drive in terms of media compatibility!

My pleasure, nypk, but thank all the people that have contributed to the list. All I did was compile all the results. :)

As for the Aopen drive, the maximum discs can be written at in the CRW-4850 is 48X because its maximum writing speed is 48X. This is the 48X12X50 drive, it's not Aopen's newest 52X24X52 drive.

Hmm, the LG 52xCDRW is still very picky about CD media to be burnt @ full speed. Where the heck is the new firmware :x

Interesting, the Aopen CRW-4850 burned the Fuji/TY 40X discs at 48X without errors, I wonder why the Memorex 40X discs didn't produce the same results. The Memorex discs didn't even reach the rated speed! Maybe it's true that Memorex/TY discs are slightly less quality than Fuji/TY.

Question

How would LTR-52246S deal with some of Verbatims' media?

I saw some regular results though some people have complained about the compatibility it has with Verbatim.

Actually, I think that applies more to the older LiteOn models. The ...6S series models seem to do okay with Verbatim media.

It may also depend on which type of Verbatim media you are referring to. ValuLife = BAD! DataLifePlus = GOOD!

I'm a bit new to these compatibility issues and c1/c2 erros, and what it all implies. Could you explain what you mean that the burn is good but you wouldn't trust it for long-term storage?

The actual bits and bytes are stored on CDs (pressed or burned) with a high degree of redundancy to compensate for possible errors in reading the media. All discs use a CIRC (Cross Interleaved Reed-Solomon Code) which allows an error correction on 2 levels: C1 and C2. Mode 1 discs (data- as opposed to music or video discs) have an additional layer of error correction. So there is a large safety-reserve built into the system.

On the other hand, discs do deteriorate over time- through normal use or chemical processes in the dye (information layer). So if there is a relatively high (fully correctable) error rate to begin with, the chances are higher that the information will (over time) become unreadable than with media that has a lower initial error rate.

The thing is- good media is affordable (very much so in the U.S.) so there's no point in taking chances with important data.

With a rider: On my Lite-On 52246s,6S0A, burning the DataLife Plus 16X discs at any speed > 8X results in very bad quality burns. I'm trying to find a place to upload the CDDoctor scans.

Anyway,I digress. New media:
Sony 40X
ATIP shows it to be made by Sony.
Smartburn Limit - 48X.
Nice media, very low amounts of C1 errors @ 48X and NO C2 errors.
