Baneonrt,
I would not worry too much about the 166's improvements over the 165. I owned the 165 briefly (I purchased it before the 166 was announced) until my grandfather needed a DVD-ROM to replace his old Toshiba drive. I gave him my 165 and purchased a 166 for myself; I could not notice any distinctions between the two drives regarding noise, speed, etc. The improvements listed are probably so subtle that only super-sensitive benchmarks would reveal a difference. Don't worry, the 165 is a great drive and my grandpa has encountered no problems (he actually remarked how quiet the drive is, because his old SCSI hard drives dwarf any components with their deafening din).
