Toshiba 1712 Jumper Setting ?

Postby Empty7 on Tue Mar 04, 2003 7:48 pm

I have my hard drive as Primary master w/slave present.
I was going to put my Tosiba DVD on Primary Slave, but the Jumper settings have Master or Slave or CS. I have no idea what CS is. So, do I put it on Slave?
Then I was going to put my CD-Rom on Secondary Master.

So, which jumper setting for the Toshiba?
Is this a good configuration?

I might be getting a CD-RW later.

Also, I do not have a cable for the DVD player yet, only for the hard drive and Cd-Rom. Can I still set up my computer with out hooking it up? This is my first computer build. I am using an Abit Max 2 version 2 Motherboard.

THANK YOU.

Also, I am a little confused as to which IDE on the Motherboard to connect to. I have 1, 2, 3, 4.

CS means Cable Select. A single drive, set as CS, is always master. When the second drive is added on the same cable, it should be set to CS also. Then it depends of the position of the attachment whether the drive is a master or slave. Don't bother with CS setting, it could cause troubles...

Your motherboard has two ordinary IDE/ATAPI channels and two special ones for RAID configuration of two or more hard drives.

On 80-pin cable the master drive should be connected at the end, and the slave in the middle. If you can put Toshiba on the middle connector, go for it. Otherwise I'd suggest to put the hard drive to the first RAID connector, Toshiba on Primary Master and CD-ROM on Secondary Master.

Okay, I am a little confused. So, I need RAID?

RAID 0 or RAID 1?

Alright, I am going to need some help, *lol*.

A single hard drive, hooked to the RAID connector, doesn't operate in RAID mode... For more details about cabling and RAID field please use Google or some other search engine. I'm too tired to write this down - going to sleep now. 8)

Okay, what I did is put the hard drive on master and plugged it into IDE 1.

Then I put DVD on Master, CD Rom on Slave. Using one very twisted ribbon cable for both, and then connected it to the Motherboard on IDE channel 2.

Is this correct?

That sounds fine. I do have two questions though, relating to your earlier post about IDE channels 1-4: what motherboard are you using, and does it have four physical connectors for IDE cables, or just two?

They are labled 1-4, but 3 and 4 are for RAID. I figured that out after a little while, *lol*. I am using the Abit IT7 MAX 2 Ver. 2 Motherboard. I wish Motherboards did come with more individual IDE connections, I think it might make connecting easier. Anyway, I think it turned out alright.
Thank You.

Yep. All is well. Of course, if you really wanted to, you should be able to put your hard drive as master on 3, your CD-ROM as master on 2, and your DVD-ROM as master on 1. But why mess with success? Enjoy your new system. :)

That is a good idea. I did not know I could use IDE 3 with only one hard drive?

I plan on getting a CD-RW at some point. I didn't think putting it as the Hard Drive's Slave would be a good idea? Maybe when I get it you can help me put the Hard Drive as Master on IDE 3, the DVD Drive as Master on IDE 2, the CD-RW as Master on IDE 1 with the CD-ROM as the Slave on IDE 1. Sound good to you? ;)
