ROFLMAO, not likely. Maybe in a 18 months. Look at the price tag? That's more than DVD buirners when they were released.

a) look at the freaking price tag
b) how many years does it take dvd recorder to get popular (and it still isn't)?
c) it's a TV RECORDER, i.e., not for computer.

it's almost as laughable as when people said "oh DVD+-R/RW is coming, bye bye CDR/RW". what's the user-base ratio now, like 1000 to 1? DVD recording/burning is NOT yet mainstream no matter which way you look at it and it's still gonna take some time, let alone blu-ray.

$4,000 is that expensive? It's still a lot cheaper than most cars and HDTV sets. It is not a PC drive as you say but a recorder to recorder HDTV quality video targeted for those who want the elegance and convenience of the the latest consumer electronics in Sony style.

It took only a few years for DVD recorders to get popular and it IS very popular among those who have use of them.

Blu-ray DVD recorders are very different from the PC drives like Ricoh MP5125Aand Sony DRU500A. There are people who have waited for Blu-ray recorders even if they cost $5,000 or $10,000 per unit. $4,000 is much lower than what the first DVD recorders costed.

There are not that many CD writer drive users in the present world. It's just some hundreds of millions on this planet of more than 6 billion people. Since there are already millions of DVD writer drive users, the ratio cannot be more than 100:1 by now. And what about new drives that are sold especially in the US and Japanese markets? It is better, easier, and more profitable to sell one DVD writer and 100 DVD media than 10 CD writers and 1,000 CD media.

I disagree. These days you buy a computer, CD writers come as standard no matter the person is actually going to use it or not (and remember that goes beyond home users), and DVD writers as a "cutting edge" option. If you look at the *volume* of CD writers units shipped vs DVD writers shipped then you know what I mean. There might be "millions of DVD writers shipped", but there are tons more for number of CD writers. My exp. is that what's going on in the geeks' world is very different then the real world.

Whether you personally agree or not does not change the fact that the number of CD writers shipped and sold in a year is under 100,000,000. Your number of "1000:1" was much too exaggerated. Just ask the largest CD writer manufacturer, LG Electronics in Seoul, how many units they ship in 2002 and 2003.

hmm can't read +RW. very intresting but at last it is just for the TV, so its not all that great. yah if u can find stuff that you want to record that is great. but what is the media going to cost ya?

$25 a disc? holy cow that would suck if that is the starting price for media. i don't think recording an episode like "Friends" would be worth that much! And what about if it coasters.. or an earthquake by your little boy jumping around... bah

While I welcome the arrival of the DVD writing technology, CD writing won't be going away any time soon.

There are lots of CD players in cars and stand alone stereos where you could just use a cheap CDRW to burn CD's.

Also, the price difference between CD and DVD media is huge.

Finally, how often would you burn a DVD to back up data versus CD-R? I always back up on a semi-monthly basis, and I always manage to just fill up a CD-R. It would be extremely wasteful to use a DVD to back up smaller amounts of personal data, or to use it to share information, unless you are talking about videos or movies.

So even if I had all the DVD burning technology, I still would use my CDRW at least 10 times more often than the DVD writer.

not really, not if you calculate cost/MB.

That's true. But I think price per disc is also very important. A lot of times we burn discs (CD and DVD) to share info with friends or to give away. At $100 per 100 DVD, versus $5 - 10 per 100 CD, it makes a lot more economical sense to look at the disc price.

I'm not sure I could afford to share hundres of copies of my wedding video, for example, with friends and family. However, I sure could share hundreds of copies of my photos on CD-R with friends and family, without a huge bite in the pocket book.

I hope the DVD media prices come down quickly 8)
