New Cars

Postby Ian on Fri Feb 28, 2003 9:47 pm

I went to the auto show in Milwaukee today. I saw a lot of nice stuff, but the car that caught my eye was the Mitsubishi Evo 8. omg.. I would trade my left nut for that car. Pictures just don't do that car justice.

I saw the new Mazdaspeed Protege too. While its not as beautiful as the Evo, its more in my price range.

My mom tagged a long too (I think she felt bad for my wife). Usually she doesn't care about cars, but we had a hard time getting her away from the new VW convertible.

Ian is seeing the light! :D :D

Mitsubishi Evolution is a man's car. Turbocharged I-4, produces 271 HP. :D Very Nice car

How about its new arch enemy
Subaru WRX STi
Turbocharged I-4, AWD, 300 HP. About $32,000
With the Camaro vs. Mustang era fast becoming a faded memory, the WRX begins a rivalry for a new generation of car enthusiasts with the Lancer Evolution. Subaru brings its rally car to the battle packing a 2.5-liter/300-horsepower DOHC turbocharged, intercooled boxer four. Its all-wheel-drive system features Driver Control Center Differential (DCCD) with a manual mode to allow the driver to adjust the power distribution front to rear. In addition, front and rear differentials further aid traction. Brembo disc brakes are at each corner, with the front boasting four-piston calipers. Well-featured for a car of its high-performance pedigree, this WRX does have several concessions to weight savings, such as aluminum hood, special rear glass, and no standard sound system. Welcome to the new muscle car era.

No pics. I should have since it wasn't very busy today.

Call me crazy, but I really don't like the way the WRX looks. I like the old 2.5RS's but the WRX just doesn't appeal to me.

They also had the new turbo charged Neon there today. Yeah, its a Dodge, but it even impresses me. Some guy was literally hugging it today. I wonder how long before he slaps on a picture of Calvin pissing on a Honda logo.

My April issue of Motor Trend states that Honda will be bringing the Civc Type R to America. 200HP in the Type R. $18,000-$20,000 est.

I would choose a Honda, but too bad it is FR, I would rather wait and see if the the next Nissan Silvia makes it here to the states. Either that or just see what Honda does to the RSX (integra).

Sincerely, both the Evo VIII and the WRX STi were a big disappointment in my opinion, although the bigger one is the EVO, man, they ruined the styling. the VI is still the best one.

I agree. I'm also dissappointed they waited so long to bring them over.

Supposed to be coming out as a 2004 model, so it'll probably show up at showrooms in the fall. If Mazda waits too long to release it, the 350Z will be dominating the market share.

I would suggest moving to the 350Z (be it the coupe or roadster) if you wanta sports car, because all the first drives of the Mazda RX-8, in which it is obviously compared to the 350Z, it has been said that it is just a sporty sedan....not a true sports car. Can;t remember if it was Road & Track or Car and Driver where I read one.

And also, it has the new Renesis rotary engine, which produces much less HP and torque than the VQ found in the Z. And according to some reports from Mazda engineers, it does not support turbo-charging.

Either the Z or the S2000, but the RX-8 is just a "family" sports car.
just my $.02.

Gotta agree with everything bto said. Honda S2000 or Nissan 350Z is the way to go.

Or, as I said, wait for the next silvia. FR goodness all under 22,000 (same price as a Civic Type-R, or and Integra Type-R).

Either that, or the new Neon SRT-4, which is turbo charged, but, it is American, and you know how dependable it would be after 10,000 miles on it.

But, another good choice is the Mazdaspeed Protege.

Although my best et still is the Silvia (240SX in the states, turbocharged goodness+RWD+under $22,000=me happy).

:D

I haven't seen a 240SX in ages. bto, is Nissan planning on bringing them back to the states?

I left a nice pile of drool on the Mazdaspeed... Nice looking car. I think I'd prefer the charcoal color to the orange though. The orange just screams speeding ticket.

They are seriously thinking of Reviving the Datsun brand, sou I would think YES. Bring it back as a Datsun.

Nice find in the picture. One of my all time favorite cars, along with other "exotic" cars.

You're absolutely right about the Mazda color. It just Screams "Me wants a Ticket."

So Ian, you lookin' at buying a new car then?.

Unfortunately, no. The wife drives about 10x farther than I do every day, so she will be in need of a car way before me.

She wants an SUV and is looking at the Saturn VUE. I'm trying to convince her to get one with real 4WD like the Jeep Liberty. That way, I can at least have fun in it. I wouldn't mind if she got something like the Toyota RAV4. At least its from a Japanese company. In any case, its gonna be a year or two before we get a new car.

In that case I would advise not to buy any Saturn products, if your lloking into a smal SUV, go with the imports.

Nissan will be bringing a new SUV called the X-trail.
Image
In the same range the RAV4 and the CR-V. All three very reliable.

Or in the upper range, the Highlander from Toyota or the new Murano from Nissan.

From family experiences and from friends' experiences, domestics (oops) have just turned out bad.

My $.02.

Thank God most imports are made right here, so you'd still be paying US workforce for the most of production/assembly process

But the best of the best Japanese imports still come from Japan.
