I tend to follow the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" maxim, but here is what I did (remember, I am using Windows 2000, so details might vary somewhate):
1. open device manager
2. select IDE controller, then right-click and select properties
select the driver tab, and press update driver
3. go through the wizard and pick the Microsoft driver (the driver provider will be listed as Microsoft rather than VIA. On my 2000 machine I am using version 5.0.2195.5438) If the wizard doesn't pick it for you, go back and check "display a list of the known drivers..." rather than "search for a suitable driver"
4. you may need the Windows installation disc
5. reboot as prompted
