We work and save up. Also taking advantage of hot deals is a big plus in keeping the cost of systems down, while getting top notch hardware. But really, the price of hardware has dropped when compared to 3-5 years ago.

I have a friend that is a tech and I get a lot of his castoffs and also follow his recomendations on what to buy thats fast and stable.
He also gets me stuff at his cost sometimes and I put him on to the latest good burners and dvd type stuff. He just got a Sony 500a becuase mine has been good and he hated waiting an hour for a disk

It's true, prices have come down a lot. My last PIII system, all SCSI cost me over $2500. I got my latest gear which is 12X faster for less than $1200.

I don't even want to tell you what I paid for my first 286...

I bet you paid $4000 for that paperweight too. You should load it up with Windows 3.1 and put it in the want adds. Bet you'd rake in a staggering $50 for it.

Man I've got a Voodoo SLI video card I paid $700 for that ain't worth stink. I bet I played 20 games on it.

My first computer was a Tandy dual drive 8088 XT. I later paid 200 for a used 20 meg hard card drive. I paid 350 for it used, upgraded it to a v-20 and upgraded to a SL a month later that I put a V-30 in.
It's been down hill since then
Memory used to be around 100 a meg or better and I remember we were thrilled to get used 1 meg chips for 25 a peice, I had a wopping 5 meg in my 386 25 dx and I could play Doom and Wing Commander pretty good with it.

Sounds like my first computer, which I also upgraded to a NEC V20, although mine was an XT clone from a company long out of business rather than a Tandy.

i just have no life... but you know what i never invested in the audio part of my computer... always been onboard sound or some cheap card

I had a friend who managed the radio Shack by me and all the guys there were my friends too so that's what we started out on. I always played the games and we tried to beat each others best scores, we loved Grand Prix.
Finally my one buddy says lets get you your own Puter but I didn't want to spend mega dollars. The outgoing regional manager was selling off his old stuff and we made a SMOKIN deal(at the time) on his used one.
Later the manger hired me and VGA and AT's came along WOW VGA and a wompin 52 meg HD built in. That was my third puter, a Tandy 10 MHZ
286 sx REALLY it was a half sized 8 bit 286. Employee package special with the worst VGA monitor I have ever owned, .42 dot pitch.

I remember paying over $5000 for a then-cutting edge Pentium II 450MHz, with a "huge" 16.8GB hard drive, 16 MG TNT card, dual Voodoo 2's, and $750 worth of Plextor 8x20 CD-R/40x CD-ROM, and a 19" monitor...Yikes...And to think I almost got a dual 450MHz w/SCSI...

I remember the old tandy's haha... cousins used to have one before I bought my 386 for a pretty hefty price, had a whopping 4 megs of ram and 2 meg video card... Only thing I can remember running on it were the old wing commander series games...

I bought my PII-350MHz with 64MB RAM and 27GB hard drive for $1200 four years ago and I recently put together a P4-2.4GHz machine with 1GB RAM and 80GB hard drive for $550. It's simply amazing how much technology prices drop!

By the way, zerogravity22, it's peanut butter jelly time, isn't it?

I'm so old school I have my screen set for CGA graphics style. High Contrast Black and ignore all fonts and styles on web pages.
