I think limited drive requirement described in the box of the drive.
But my personal experience DVD-rom min. req. must be P3-450mhz system plus graphic card supports DVD accelerator. (more MB in memory ,better colors)

I used to have a 12x Creative Labs DVD on a K6-2 500 with 192mb of PC100 ram, Voodoo 3 3000 APG and couldn't get a DVD to play smoothly at all. I ended up buyer a DXR3 card to compensate. Worked fine then. Voodoo cards (well all graphics cards from then) didn't do sod all for DVD playback.

You should be able to pick up a dxr3 card really cheap now...check Ebay. Mine was made by Creative Labs...just a hardware DVD decoder that fits into your PCI slot. Had TV out and everything. Coupled with some region free software it worked well. It was just os much hassel to rig cables into the living room :(

The above is a UK auction but you get the general idea. They aren't much in demand at the moment so DON'T pay over the odds for one. Peeps on there selling one for £50 are deluding themselves.

why go that route? just pick up a cheap radeon 7000 in either pci or agp from just about anyplace and you're in business. they have thier OWN dvd decoder built in
