"my pioneer" ???

Seriously, if you want to get any help you have to give more details than that, including what you mean by "crack"

I'm not sure what you are looking for but Pioneer has an upgrade for all of the Pioneer drives on their web page. The one for the A04 worked but the one for the A05 did not work. I didn't bother with the one for the A04 because the upgrade did not look like it was worth the bother.

I guess these are not really cracks though. I envision a "crack" as something that allows you to do something that Pioneer did not intend you to do, is that right?

Good luck with it.

The use of cracks is forbidden by this site. So if your looking for a "crack" to unlock some ability on your Pioneer drive, this is not the place to be looking for it. However, if your looking for the newest firmware for your drive, I would check out Pioneer's website or do a search on the net for it.

Don't get so havey BuddhaTB
He is most likely looking for a region free firmware.
At least I think that's what he's after and I don't believe Ian objects to those. After all, Regional Playback Control is NOT backed by any law.

Would be nice of EmptyGarden if he helps us out of this stupid puzzle, tell us what model he has and what he's after, so we might be able to help him.

Lol, this is a funny thread :P

Indeed. Regional coding has been declared illegal in Australia, due to the illegal price fixing it permits the major studios to participate in.

im sorry for making it a bit unclear what i was aking. A firmware hack is the only thing iv heard can let me see other regions DVDs without changing the region thing on my DVD-rom. I don't think its illigel to make my DVD-rom region free here in norway where i live. So any advice on how i can solve this problem i would be greatful. I have a Pioneer DVD-ROM DVD-116.

Hi EmptyGarden, took you a while to clear this one for us heh?

Patched firmware's are available for your drive. Go to this page and click the links for them:
http://forum.firmware-flash.com/dl_firm ... ufactor=25
And no, it's not illegal anyware. In fact the whole regional protection business has no legal legs to stand on.

Sorry, I did not realize everyone was so gun shy about the work "crack". I guess it was just a poor choice of words on my part. What I am trying to do is get firmeware that will make the damn thing work as it was designed to do. Now if that is in the form of a "crack" I am sorry. But I bought his drive under a given set of expectations plainly written on the box and it does not live up to those expectations or what is wrtten on the box. I thought maybe I could get some help from this forum but it appears alll that anyone is worried about is offending some set of silly rules that certainly do not apply to my post or this one!

I hope this clears up my intentions!..........

It is more of a "modification/patch" than a "hack" or a "crack". :)

I think in this particular case we are probably getting way off of the intended subjects of this forum but the word "crack" when referring to firmware does not conjure up the idea of getting something for nothing the way it does when speaking of regular software products. I do not think the work "crack" in this case violates the Holy of holies for the forum since almost all firmware is provided free by the vendors. In this case it usually refers to firmware that is not authored by the vendor that will allow the hardware to do something it should be doing in the first place.

Anyway that's MHO.............

that depends on your point of view.
i'm sure the movie studios would disagree.

thinking about this, i wonder how much this really matters to anyone in the US, does anyone there really need to see non-zone 1 DVDs? how often does that happen?

Hmm let me see:

1) People who travel internationally on business or holiday, and purchase a few DVDs there. They then return home to the US and find that their region 1 DVD player will not allow them to watch what they have legally paid to view.

2) People who wish to watch movies that US distributors decide is not profitable to retail in the USA, such as many anime/cult series, which have to be ordered from other countries.

3) Numerous other possibilities.

Just say no to region coding, it is bad technology that hinders consumer rights.

My drive is region free though I only own Region One DVD's. I agree that Regions are one of the worst ideas ever.

Well personally I have never seen a DVD that was not region 1. But all of that aside this discussion was about firmware to allow the Sony to burn at 4X like it is supposed to. It had nothing to do with regions, etc. However I do see your point. A firmware "crack" could be construed as something that may be considered by some to be illegal, allthough I don't believe it is illegal in the U.S. I guess if you want to take our discussion out of context you could say it was against the policies of the forum and for that I am forever sorry............

the reason i posted this my question is because here in norway we use region 2 and they come later then region 1. I can see the piont why they use the system, but they could have done it some other way

i was just curious.
one of the main reasons for this system is so that they don't lose on money from people buying DVDs in the states and taking them elsewhere, presumbly because it is cheaper to buy them in the US.
or buying them in the US and taking them to another country in which the film hasn't been officially released yet.

as for "legally paid to view", i'm not sure about that. you paid when you bought a region X DVD which legally entitles you to view it in a zone X player, presumably in a zone X country. having purchased it does not necessary mean you are "legally" entitled to view it in another zone by "cracking" or whatever.
at least so they would want it to be.
i'm sure they're not "legally" covered in this argument, at least not everywhere.
but i do agree this sucks.

btw, when i purchased my DVD player when a tourist in NYC (a Sony capable of multi-zone, or more precisely region-free or region 0 i've been told) i also bought the Matrix DVD in Virgin's store in Times Square. turned out to be cheaper to buy it here in Israel (very small diff) and here i get the Hebrew subtitles too! but then again i didn't bargain shop in NYC

How are the studios losing money by having someone pay for a DVD in the USA? They aren't. The problem the studios have is that they insist on charging different prices in different areas of the world. And then bitch when global commerce provides the means for people to spend their money and buy their products where they see fit. You buy a DVD, you can watch it wherever and whenever you want to. There is absolutely no law anywhere on earth that upholds region coding, and many in fact prohibit it's use. In fact the US is not very cheap for DVD's. Amazon.ca often have cheaper pricing for the same Region 1 DVD as amazon.com. Australian prices are much lower than the US by comparison. Still, politics and syndication conspire to prevent people from watching what they want and have paid for. For example you can get Buffy Season 1-5 on DVD in the UK and Aust. In the USA? Only up to Season 3. Same with Futurama, Red Dwarf etc.

Red Dwarf???
do i smell BBC?
if you tell me you can get in Australia all Dr. Who episodes on DVD, i'm on the next plane! hell i'm emmigrating!!!

more seriously, what i meant was that if i buy a DVD in the US 'cause it's cheaper than buying here in Israel, the Israeli distributor loses out, not the studios directly. it's an evil gang all conspiring against us, alas.

and besides, maybe DVDs are cheaper in Australia than in the US, but i think that is an exception to the rule, in most cases (countries) it is the other way around.

There are two controls on region coding in software. Your software DVD player keeps count of the number of changes left (starts at 5). And win2k/XP allows you one/two changes (this is what you saw under drive properties). Both can be taken back to original change amounts via DVD Genie.

DVD Genie or Region Killer will reset or specify the region. And as long as your hardware is region free, you can play any region DVD!
