Best chipset?

Is there any concensus on which chipset is the highest performance/best quality? Or is brandname a better indicator of overall performance/quality?

I'm like that guy in the CDW commercial who tells his IT guy: "Fred: All I know about computer is I want a better one than everybody else has" 8)

the nforce2 is a pretty good mobo chipset, although at my house i use 2 intel 810s and a kt266a and a kt400 no problems there.

Yep. MediaTek is the only way to go for Optical Drive chipsets. VIA is my choice for mobo chipsets, but the nforce is good as well.

Aren't there compatibility issues with some VIA chipsets? Compatibility issues with video cards and even CD burners.

I guess this top is veering toward a General Hardware Question. :)

I don't have any problems at all. I used to though, but bios updates and new 4-in-1's fixed them all.

Not with VIA chipsets. I think you meant the SIS chipsets. I've heard numerous compatibility issues between SIS chipsets and other hardware like CD-RW drives and video cards.

I was refering to cd-r drives. :D

Which manufacturers uses mediatek chipsets?

On the other hand...
I've heard my share of horror stories about VIA... :wink:

I like high performance but not at the cost of stability or longevity. Not a bleeding-edge kind of guy I guess.

Maybe a better way to ask it is which drives don't use mediatek?

From jase in other thread:

Mitsumi/MSI/Yamaha (Oak chip), Aopen/Artec (Ricoh) or Plextor (Sanyo)

I take it my Samsung has a Richo chipset (which is similar to Mediatek?).

Just curious, no biggie....

Manufacturers which may use Mediatek chipsets: Lite-ON, BTC, ASUS, LG, and of course OEMS of all of these manufacturers!

My Artec/Ultima DHM-G48 DVD-ROM drive has a MTK chipset.

See a little thread here about compatible drives and maybe contribute if you can.

I tried out that program mtk155 and sadly it didn't work on my samsung. I believe I have a Ricoh chipset. I'll post the results over at CDfreaks too. :D
