New KHypermedia coasters DRU-500A; OK on A05 ?!?!

Postby VEFF on Thu Feb 13, 2003 5:33 am

I just bought a 10 pack of KHypermedia DVD-Rs in-store to tide me over
till any online orders I place today come in.
I wanted some to use while I am off next week

The discs looked similar to the 5 pack wityh jewel cases, and the media ID is the same (CMC...)

The first two produced coasters on my DRU-500A (1.0g) - One was tried at 2X, the other at 1X :(
The previous 5 pack was 5 perfect burns (firmware 1.0f though, maybe one under 1.0g).
I wonder if the new firmware has something to do with it?
Maybe I was getting buffer underruns, due to surfing at the same time, although that shouldn't be an issue...

I was going to return them, when I decided to try my A05.
Well, the A05 (fw 1.00; haven't upgraded to 1.21 yet, since I have read that a number of people prefer firmware 1.00 with this drive) burned it fine (at 1X) :)

So far the A05, which boblx2 has trouble finding media for, is three for three in terms of perfect burns, for me -
Princo 2X, KHypermedia 1X and one other brand whose name eludes me, as it is 4:30 AM; I woke up earl and wanted to check the burn I started before going to bed last night (tonight) (about to go back to bed).

I still want to try and get replacement discs for the coasters.
I will print out vcdhelp's media comments, where many people wrote about coasters with these.
Burners only:

UPDATE: Now that I have had a chance to try it out a bit more, the
KHypermedia DVD-R burned ("burn completed successfully") with the A05 (fw 1.00) works fine TILL about half way through the home movie, then the video becomes badly garbled (understatement) and the disc even stops playing!!!

This KHypermedia 10 pack spindle was made by CMC, just like the previous 5 pack with jewel cases that I bought a while ago, which worked flawlessly.
It really seems like hit or miss with these KHypermedia, as some people at vcdhelp.com reported problems with some batches).

Now I have to return them.
I hope OfficeMax is good about returns...

I doubt it will be worth it to try another batch???

The infamous CMC quality control problem rears its ugly head again... :(

Yup, unfortunately. The previous ones were great and even burned at 2X on the DRU-500A... (fw = 1.0f)
I just hope my OfficeMax is understanding about returning them, which reminds me that I should print the vcdhelp.com reviews, so they know it isn't just I who is having problems with them.

I returned the KHypermedia today.

I bought a 15 pack of Verbatim DVD-R today for $38 + tax (before $8 MIR) (was going to get DVD+R which is strangely $5 cheaper, but my better DVD player doesn't play +R, and both of my home DVD players (and also my Xbox) play -R.

That should tide me over, during my week off work, till I order some online, either 2X or 4X DVD-Rs.

I was potentially interested in the 50 pack of Memorex (2X) DVD-R at BB for $89.99 (I also have a 10% off coupon for this wekeend only, that would have made it $81 + tax), but they were out of stock.
In addition, the KHypermedia and Memorex BOTH have the exact same media ID (CMC....), so maybe it is a good thing they were out of stock.

I did buy a one pack of Memorex in a jewel case (exact same jewel case over than paper, as KHypermedia!!!) a year ago, and like the KHypmedia in jewel cases, it worked fine with my, then, Panasonic DVD burner.

Seems like hit and miss :(
Too bad; $81 in-store for 50 name brand DVD-Rs is a nice price!

Anyway, now to decide whether to order:
Lead Data (1X- 2X if DRU-500A is used)
Princo 2X
DVD-ON 4X

If anyone here has ordered from yesbuy.net let us know.

I don't like the fact that they show shipping charges on checkout screen (it is supposed to be FREE shipping), and then MANUALLY have to remove it; this can lead to errors...
