16x CRW2100EZ only burns at 8x

This is getting annoying - even though everything in My Computer, The CDRW drive, the software is set to burn at 16x or MAX, it only burns at 8x. If I do a simulated burn, it will hit 16x, but then the actual burn is only 8x. It does the same thing in EZ CD Creator 5.x, Alcohol 120%, CDRWin, CloneCD. The OS is WinXP Pro, Yamaha 2100EZ burner, and Vertbatim, Memorex, Imation, and Radio Shack media. It doesn't matter which brands are used, it always maxes out at 8x. It must be a WindowsXP problem but I can't find any fixes that work.

Are you talking "on the fly" or from HD?

What do you have in your system?
CPU(speed)?
MotherBoard(make)?
Controller(type)?
HardDrive(transfer rate{controller to buffer, buffer to platter})? (seek {write, read, track to track, full stroke})?
Memory(amount, speed?
Is ASPI installed(what version)?

All of this has to be answered before beginning figure it out.

Intel D850EMV2 motherboard
Intel 82801BA ATA100 IDE controller
HardDrives - 1) 40GB Maxtor 6L040J2, 1) 30GB Quantum Fireball LM30
Memory - 512MB PC800 Rambus
ASPI is 4.7

Also, Blank CDRs do not launch the autorun menu to pick which software to burn the disk with. CDRs with data do, just not blank ones. And yes, it IS set to ask whether I wish to use Easy CD, CDRWin, etc..

I've tried it both with DMA enabled and disabled. It always only burns at 8X. The test burn is 16X, actual burn only 8X. The autorun window not starting up for a blank CD is equally annoying.

Just curious, but how old is the drive? Unless I'm missing something, you didn't say if the drive is new or used. If it's used, how old is it?
