looking for buying a new DVD-rom

Postby noobsaibot on Fri Feb 07, 2003 11:30 pm

Helo friends, recently my creative dvd 8400e has died, so I am looking after buying a new drive:

the only DVD's available from where I live are two:

LG DVD 8160B (16x)
Lite On (16x), but I don't know the model number (163,163D, 165H, 166S)

Which one of these would you recommend buying? I intend to use it mostly for ripping DVD movies.

Is any of them better than the other when dealing with scratched/dirty media, etc;?

Thanks.

I've been happy with both a Lite On 163 and the new 166s. They both rip audio at over 48x, The DVD rip on the newer 166 seems fast enough and it is the only Liteon I own that can handle protected audio cd's, at least some of them anyways. I don't think they are oustanding at handling scratched stuff but they usualy will get through it and they keep updating the firmware to improve them.
I finally retired my Plex 40 wide becuase the latest 166 does every thing the plex could faster, and it reads DVD's too.

I have one LiteOn 166S drive and it's very good. It's a fast DVD ripper (11~12x DVD-video single layer). It can handle CDS-200 and Key2Audio and can do DAE at 48x.
