thanks for the DMA instructions. came across that problem myself and worked like a charm
i have a question tho - is there still a way to manually assign drive letters to my cd/dvd drives? after i reinstalled my secondary IDE, XP swapped my cdrw drive letter and my dvdrom drive letter. i remember doing it before i started using XP, but i cant find that option anywhere now. any suggestions? thanks!

i'm no expert on winXP but i think i can guide you through:
right-click My Computer -> Manage
then: Storage -> Disk Management
in the lower-right pane, find the square that corresponds to the drive you want to change and right-click -> Change Drive Letter and Paths...
click on the Change button, in the pull-down menu on the right change the letter and click OK. Confirm with Yes.
then you can close the Computer Management window.
worked for me - just changed my CD-ROM from F to H.
